Cleaning Technician – Skills Needed

A successful Cleaning Technician should have the following skills and qualities:

Essential Skills

• Attention to Detail – Ability to notice dirt, stains, dust, trash, and areas that need additional cleaning.
• Time Management – Ability to complete assigned cleaning tasks efficiently and within scheduled timeframes.
• Reliability & Dependability – Arrive on time, follow scheduled shifts, and complete assigned work.
• Cleaning Knowledge – Understand proper cleaning methods for floors, restrooms, offices, common areas, and other facilities.
• Chemical Safety – Know how to safely use, dilute, label, store, and dispose of cleaning chemicals.
• Equipment Operation – Ability to safely operate vacuums, mops, auto scrubbers, buffers, floor machines, and other cleaning equipment.
• Floor Care Skills – Basic knowledge of sweeping, mopping, auto scrubbing, stripping, waxing, buffing, and maintaining different types of flooring.
• Organization – Keep cleaning supplies, equipment, and work areas organized.
• Physical Stamina – Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, lift, push, and pull equipment for extended periods.
• Problem Solving – Ability to identify cleaning problems and determine the appropriate method or product to resolve them.
• Communication Skills – Communicate professionally with supervisors, customers, coworkers, and other building personnel.
• Teamwork – Work effectively with other cleaning technicians and follow instructions from supervisors.
• Safety Awareness – Follow OSHA, workplace safety, and company procedures to prevent accidents and injuries.
• Quality Control – Inspect completed work and make sure areas meet company cleanliness standards.
• Professionalism – Maintain a positive attitude, appropriate appearance, and respectful behavior while representing the company.
• Customer Service – Respond courteously to customer requests and maintain a professional relationship with clients.
• Adaptability – Ability to work in different buildings, environments, and cleaning situations.
• Confidentiality & Trustworthiness – Respect customer property, private information, and facility security.

Preferred Skills

• Previous commercial cleaning experience
• Experience with commercial floor care
• Experience operating an auto scrubber or floor buffer
• Knowledge of green-cleaning practices
• OSHA or workplace safety training
• Ability to complete cleaning checklists and inspection reports
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Basic understanding of inventory and supply management

Physical Requirements

Cleaning Technicians may be required to:

• Lift and carry cleaning supplies and equipment
• Push and pull cleaning machines
• Stand and walk for extended periods
• Bend, kneel, reach, and climb stairs
• Perform repetitive cleaning motions
• Work around cleaning chemicals and equipment while following proper safety procedures
