CNA

JOB FUNCTION:

Under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and/or licensed professional nurse, a nurse aide may participate in direct patient care, selected treatments, documentation of observations and care given, and the reporting of patient’s signs, symptoms, and conditions. Contributes to the patient’s physical comfort and helps patient in completing daily activities of living in a safe manner. The CNA functions as an integral part of the nursing team. All tasks must be performed in compliance with established policies and procedures of Allen Parish Hospital and supervised by the LPN and RN.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Listens to shift-change report and obtains assignments for patient care from the RN or LPN.
• Answers patient call lights promptly and courteously.
• Distributes and collects meal trays, monitors food and fluid intake and records accurately and appropriately.
• Provides between-meal nourishments, water, etc.
• Feeds patient requiring help and maintains and elevated HOB throughout the feeding process.
• Knows correct procedures when caring for isolation patient as well as setting up isolation.
• Transports patient to treatment unit, etc., and assists patient to ambulate and/or exercise.
• Obtains vital signs (respirations, temperature, blood pressure, pulse) and daily weights per routine and as assigned.
• Obtains intake and output information as well as notes BM(s) and voiding(s).
• Reports unusual conditions or reactions to RN.
• Maintains satisfactory physical environment in patient’s room and does not utilize/store excess linens in the patient room.
• Spends time with and listens to patients and/or their families.
• Changes patient’s bed linens.
• Collects and bags soiled linen and appropriately places it in designated bins.
• Performs treatments as directed by the RN with appropriate training such as sitz baths, hot and cold compresses, and daily catheter care.
• Accurately, timely, and appropriately documents information in the patient’s chart.
• Keeps, supply cart, central supply closet, employee break room, linen closet, nurse’s station, and locker areas clean and tidy.
• Runs errands and retrieves supplies.
• Reports leaving work area to the RN.
• Attends and participates in required monthly staff meetings (according to employment status), in-services, select committees, and annual hospital orientation.
• Knows CPR, disaster, safety, and fire plans.
• Maintains confidentiality
• Any overtime is approved prior to working.
• Improves job knowledge though self-study
• Assists with admissions, transfer, and discharge process courteously and promptly.
• The CNA will promote teamwork by interacting and communicating with fellow employees in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative working environment.
• At times of need, may be asked to work varying shifts.
