Porter / Handyperson

A 12-building cooperative campus in Harlem is looking for a reliable, hardworking Porter/Handyperson to join our maintenance team. You'll work closely with our superintendent and two other porters to keep our walk-up buildings clean, safe, and running smoothly for our residents. We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, shows up on time, and genuinely cares about the community they're maintaining.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, mop, and clean interior and exterior common areas across 12 buildings
• Manage trash and recycling, bagging, hauling, and keeping areas clear
• Respond to resident maintenance requests such as clogged drains, leaking vents, and damaged walls
• Perform routine checks on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems and flag issues
• Handle exterior maintenance including painting and minor repairs
• Coordinate deliveries from vendors and suppliers
• Keep records of inspections, maintenance issues, and supply inventory
• Follow all safety standards and procedures at all times
• This position reports directly to the building superintendent.

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience in building maintenance, janitorial, or a related role
• Reliable, punctual, and physically able to handle demanding work (lifting, walking, standing for extended periods, working in all weather)
• Strong time management - able to juggle multiple tasks across multiple buildings
• Good communication skills for working with the team and interacting with residents
• Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, or masonry is a strong plus

Schedule

• Monday to Friday
• 8-hour shifts
• Rotating weekends
• On-call availability
• Overtime and holidays as needed
