Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Position Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides direct resident care in a skilled nursing setting while helping maintain a safe, abuse-free environment. Under the direction of licensed nursing staff, the CNA assists residents with activities of daily living; promotes comfort, dignity, and independence; observes and reports changes in condition; and supports the interdisciplinary team in delivering high-quality, person-centered care.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide direct resident care according to individualized care plans, including assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, oral hygiene, eating, and other activities of daily living.
- Assist residents with transfers, ambulation, repositioning, range of motion, and the safe use of mobility and mechanical lift equipment.
- Perform resident safety rounds at regular intervals throughout the shift to promote resident comfort, safety, and well-being.
- Measure and accurately record vital signs, weights, intake and output, and other assigned observations, reporting changes in condition immediately to the Charge Nurse.
- Observe residents for changes in physical, emotional, cognitive, or behavioral status and promptly communicate concerns to licensed nursing staff.
- Respond promptly to residents’ call lights and requests for assistance while providing compassionate, respectful care.
- Assist with admissions, transfers, discharges, meals, hydration, and feeding assistance as needed.
- Encourage and assist residents in participating in recreational and therapeutic activities that promote quality of life.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of resident care using approved documentation systems.
- Maintain resident rooms, equipment, and common areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition while following infection prevention and control practices.
- Stock resident care supplies and maintain clean utility areas as assigned.
- Protect resident rights, privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and independence while maintaining effective communication with residents, families, and members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Immediately report allegations or incidents of abuse, neglect, exploitation, accidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions in accordance with facility policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in shift report, resident care planning, required meetings, annual in-services, state-mandated education, and ongoing training.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of quality resident care.
Qualifications
- Current, active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the state of employment (West Virginia or Ohio).
- Completion of an approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Current CPR certification preferred or obtained within the required timeframe.
- Minimum of six months of experience in geriatric or long-term care preferred.
- Experience caring for residents with dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or other specialized populations is preferred.
- Ability to safely operate resident lift equipment and follow safe resident handling procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Ability to complete all required documentation accurately and timely.
- Successful completion of annual state-required in-service education and competency requirements.
- Annual Tuberculosis (TB) screening and other required health screenings.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, balance, and perform repetitive hand movements throughout the shift.
- Ability to provide hands-on resident care, including bathing, dressing, repositioning, transferring, feeding, and assisting with mobility.
- Ability to safely push wheelchairs, beds, carts, and resident care equipment.
- Ability to frequently lift, reposition, push, pull, or transfer residents using proper body mechanics and mechanical lift equipment.
- Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds and assist with lifting or moving residents weighing up to 100 pounds or more with assistance or mechanical lifting devices.
- Ability to maintain visual and auditory acuity necessary to monitor resident safety, recognize changes in condition, obtain vital signs, complete documentation, and respond to alarms and emergencies.
- Ability to remain calm, organized, and focused while managing multiple resident care priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment
This position is performed in a skilled nursing environment with frequent exposure to infectious diseases, airborne illnesses, bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals, and medical equipment. Employees may work in wet or humid conditions while assisting with resident bathing and personal care and may be exposed to moving equipment and varying noise levels throughout the facility. Noise levels may range from quiet resident rooms to busy nursing stations and common areas.
