Definition & Essential FunctionsUnder general supervision, lifeguard multiple aquatic programs for the Sierra Vista Aquatic Center. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt.

Leads the lifeguard staff in their assigned duties. Opens pool area and secures pool upon closing. Assists with building opening and closing procedures.
Leads and/or maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the pool area and enforces all rules and policies of Aquatic Center to ensure pool rules are being followed and patrons are engaging in safe pool activity.
Avoids all unnecessary conversation with the public while guarding in order to ensure proper attention is given to surveillance and safety activities.
Leads and/or acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency. Provides emergency care and treatment within the scope of lifeguard training as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
Leads and/or conducts rotations regularly as scheduled, which includes checking the dressing and shower areas, the lobby and ancillary areas to ensure safety and cleanliness.
Presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times, represents the Aquatic Center in a positive manner and maintains a high standard of customer service with community members and visitors of all ages.
Leads lifeguard staff in same.
Examples include greeting the public in a warm manner and promptly and properly handling or referring all questions/requests.
Assists with basic functions at the front counter: conducts point of sale transactions; greets customers in a warm and friendly manner; answers the telephone; answers and/or direct questions and requests.
Follows all cash handling procedures and policies.
Conducts water quality monitoring and basic calibrations to ensure proper water balance.
Perform record keeping as required and/or assigned.
Leads and/or performs janitorial duties for pool area and locker rooms. Ensures all areas are clean, stocked and well-maintained.
Teaches swim lessons.
Notifies appropriate individuals of needed repairs or safety concerns.
Completes records and reports as required.
Develops and maintains positive and productive relationships with colleagues.
Follows all safety rules and procedures for work areas.
Other related duties as assigned.
Applicant must be able to work a flexible schedule; work hours will vary depending upon type of program that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Incumbent may also be required to work non-aquatic department and city special events.
Knowledges, Skills & Other CharacteristicsKnowledge of:
The essential characteristics of a professional lifeguard.
Injury prevention and facility safety.
Water park lifeguarding.
Pool rules, policies, procedures and enforcement.
Preventing disease transmission.
Principles, practices, and concepts of basic first aid.
Skill in:
Teaching swim lessons.
Patron surveillance.
Performing procedures for a water emergency.
Activating an emergency action plan.
Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the professional rescuer (CPR/PR).
Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and Oxygen administration.
Caring for head, neck, and back injuries in the water and on land.
Communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public and department staff.
- Must be a minimum of 17 years of age.
- Six months related aquatic experience (One year preferred)
- Experience in teaching American Red Cross swim lessons
- Valid Arizona Driver License
Required Valid Certifications:
- Current Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid
- ARC Water Safety Instructor or equivalent
- American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen
Submission of high school diploma, GED, or college transcripts required (not required for current high school students).
Submission of valid certifications required.
