Job Description
Make a daily difference as an on-site Sign Language Interpreter, providing dedicated support to a Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) student at a Head Start center near Gary, IN. This contract opportunity focuses on enabling educational access and meaningful participation for a single student, ensuring their needs are met with professionalism and compassion.
Key Qualifications:
• Valid certification or credentials as a Sign Language Interpreter
• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
• Previous experience working with DHH children in an educational setting preferred
• Ability to interpret classroom instruction and facilitate communication between student, peers, and staff
• Professional demeanor, punctuality, and reliability
• Commitment to student confidentiality and advocacy
Essential Responsibilities:
• Provide real-time sign language interpretation for all classroom activities and school interactions
• Work closely with one DHH student to ensure full participation in the academic environment
• Collaborate with teachers and school staff to support the student’s learning and social integration
• Accurately interpret educational materials and facilitate communication during lessons, activities, and breaks
• Support the student in group settings as well as individual instruction scenarios
Work Schedule:
• On site at a Head Start center in Crown Point
• 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
• 30 hours per week
