Key/Essential Functions & Responsibilities :

  • Supports the safe and effective care of patients in assigned clinic(s), assisting nurses and providers with preparation for and during encounters with patients in accordance with all applicable regulations and requirements, promoting continuity of care by serving as a liaison between Premier Healthcare (PHC) and the patient and circles of support involved in their care.  

  • Documents all patient-related activities in the electronic medical record system in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures, ensuring all patient and encounter information is entered accurately and completely to support necessary follow-ups and to facilitate appropriate billing and timely closeouts.  

  • Maintains overall cleanliness and organization of treatment rooms and other areas of the practice site, cleaning and preparing rooms with required supplies before and after patient visits and removing filled sharps disposal units or other biohazardous waste in accordance with all safety requirements.  

  • Assists with stocking and maintenance of supply room, escalating low inventory items to Charge LPN.  

  • Escorts patients to and from the exam rooms, assisting with management of patient flow and prepares patients for visits, reviewing intake packets and other documentation, verifying consent and identity, collecting medical history and other information, including patient or family concerns or questions. 

  • Obtains vital signs, height, weight, BMI and/or waist circumference as applicable for visit type or as requested by provider and documents all information in the electronic medical record, escalating pertinent clinical findings to appropriate clinician(s).  

  • Assists with examination of the patient, as directed by the clinician/nurse, which may include positioning and supporting patients or implementing restraint of patients in accordance with documented treatment plans.  

  • Ensures safety of patients and staff during encounters, assisting with therapeutic interventions using approved techniques and as directed by providers or clinic leadership.  

  • Collects samples and specimens from patients consistent with clinician’s orders, which includes assisting with or performing phlebotomy and EKGs on adult and pediatric patients in compliance with NYS Department of Health (DOH) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines, processing and documenting laboratory requests accurately and timely.  

  • Participates in daily and weekly team meetings, huddles and grand rounds.  

  • Coordinates prescription, form or other related requests with providers and applicable support staff, which may include entering or updating electronic medical record system or relaying information to appropriate parties, as requested. 

  • Participates in quality improvement activities and escalates quality and/or compliance concerns to Practice Administrator, supervisor or other applicable departments in accordance with policies and procedures or as directed by supervisor.   

  • Reports all safety and health hazards to appropriate personnel in a timely manner and responds quickly to emergency conditions, assisting as directed by supervisor, providers or other clinic leadership.  

  • Adheres to all applicable regulations, procedures and protocols in exercise of all clinical activities, including NYS Department of Health (DOH) regulations and protocols and PHC Policy and Procedures Manual, keeping current with updates and changes through on-site training, continuing education and reviewing reference documents. 

  • Complies with all Federal, State, Local and other relevant regulatory agency requirements, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 

  • Performs all other duties, as assigned, including performing duties of medical secretary and/or at other clinic locations to support day-to-day operations, as requested. 

Minimum Qualification Requirements including education, experience, licensure/certification, etc. and essential physical capabilities (e.g., lifting, assisting lifting, standing, etc.)  

  • Completion of a medical assisting certificate program; or 

  • High school diploma or its educational equivalent and one (1) year of experience in an outpatient clinic, doctor’s office or other healthcare environment performing medical and/or patient support-related duties; and 

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; or 

  • Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training; however, all incumbents must hold current BLS certification. 

  • Proficiency with computers and electronic systems, including experience using electronic medical record/electronic health record system (EMR/EHR) and basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook, along with the ability to learn to use common office equipment and various electronic systems, databases and software programs. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Strong customer service skills and professional manner. 

  • Basic problem-solving skills and good judgment, including the ability to interpret and follow verbal and written instructions and to recognize situations that require escalation. 

  • Ability to regularly report to assigned clinic location and willingness to travel to and/or provide coverage at other clinic locations across New York City, as needed. 

  • Ability to work on Saturdays up to two (2) times per month, as needed.  

  • Ability to meet essential physical demands of position including: using hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; regularly moving around the clinic, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling and reaching with hands and arms; assisting with moving/positioning individuals of any weight in or between treatment rooms and lifting and/or moving supplies or boxes weighing up to 25 pounds at assigned location, as needed.

Preferred Qualification Requirements (desired requirements beyond MQRs above) 

  • National certification as a Medical Assistant issued by the American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA) or National HealthCareer Association (CCMA)  

  • Experience with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) 

  • Verbal and/or written fluency in a second language, Spanish highly preferred 

Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm

Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour
