Job Summary

Under general supervision, incumbent is responsible for overseeing Access Services related functions; interpreting and enforcing unit, department, and library policy/procedure; opening and/or closing building; overall building and collection security; oversees Public Service Desk; may schedule, train and supervise student assistants. Position is responsible for representing the University Library to patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays. Access Services is responsible for providing access to and maintaining in good physical order the University Library's general collections. The unit provides access to material not owned by a patron's home library via Interlibrary Loan or Document Delivery Services.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No Min Education Required.
  • Experience working in Library operations in an academic library public service setting (Facilities/Security, Circulation, Reference, Personnel, Stacks Maintenance, Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services) including experience operating automated library systems, catalogs, and other library-related databases
  • Experience serving as a work leader including training, directing, evaluating, and motivating others.
  • Experience and technical proficiency using computers, databases, online information resources, and other technology to retrieve, enter, maintain, and communicate information.
  • Customer Service skills to provide exceptional service to patrons including the ability to effectively explain complex policies; remain calm and exercise tact and compassion when dealing with difficult individuals.
  • Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly, provide responsive and courteous service, collaborate effectively with others, and communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Organizational and time-management skills to work independently, prioritize and manage competing demands, adapt to changing priorities, and adjust workflow to meet deadlines and organizational needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently assess situations, analyze information, identify and resolve problems, exercise sound judgment, and determine appropriate courses of action within established policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience responding appropriately to emergencies and unusual situations, exercising sound judgment, following established procedures, and determining when to manage, escalate, or refer incidents.
  • Knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures; skills to interpret, articulate and apply Unit/Library/University policy, procedure and practice to patrons/staff, and make appropriate referrals for optimal service.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a contributing member of a team to establish unit goals; plan, organize and implement unit procedures to achieve goals; and back-up co-workers during staffing shortages and heavy workload periods.
  • Knowledge of Library of Congress (LC) and/or National Library of Medicine (NLM) classification systems.
  • Knowledge of bibliographic principles and information retrieval techniques, with experience using library catalogs, databases, and online resources to locate, evaluate, and interpret library materials.
  • Math skills sufficient to compile statistics, perform calculations, and accurately interpret and analyze data.
