Job Title: Pediatric Pathologists' Assistant

Job Purpose

The Pediatric Pathologists' Assistant provides high-level, specialized technical services in anatomic pathology. Operating under the direct supervision of a board-certified Pediatric Pathologist, the PA is responsible for the macroscopic examination, dissection, and triaging of surgical tissue specimens and the performance of pediatric and fetal post-mortem examinations.

Key Responsibilities

• Surgical Pathology Grossing: Perform the gross description and dissection of a full range of pediatric surgical specimens, from minor biopsies to complex multi-organ cancer resections.
• Tissue Triaging: Ensure proper selection of tissue for ancillary studies such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, electron microscopy, and molecular/genetic testing.
• Autopsy Services: Conduct neonatal, fetal, and pediatric autopsies, including external examinations, evisceration, organ dissection, and formulation of a preliminary summary of findings.
• Intraoperative Consultations: Assist with frozen section preparation and fine needle aspiration (FNA) triaging during active surgeries.
• Imaging & Documentation: Document findings using advanced digital photography and specimen radiography systems. Dictate clear, comprehensive macroscopic descriptions
• Lab Management & Safety: Maintain compliance with College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines, manage inventory, and supervise/train pathology residents or laboratory technicians.

Qualifications & Experience

• Graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Master’s Program.
• PA(ASCP) certification or eligible.
• 1–2 years of experience in an anatomical pathology laboratory preferred; direct pediatric or academic medical center experience is highly desirable.
• In-depth knowledge of pediatric embryology, anatomy, and disease processes.
