Water | Wells | Pumps

Location: Columbus, OH 43207 | Employment Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire | Schedule: Monday-Friday | 7:30 AM-4:30 PM or 8:00 AM-5:00 PM | Travel: Approximately 50% | Primarily Ohio & Neighboring States

THE OPPORTUNITY:

  • Our client is seeking an experienced Municipalities Estimator / Sales Engineer to join their growing team and support projects involving water wells, pumps, drilling, municipal infrastructure, and related services.

  • This is a highly visible, hands-on position combining estimating, technical sales, project coordination, client relationship management, and field operations.

  • The successful candidate will work directly with municipalities, engineers, water operators, business leaders, project stakeholders, and internal operations teams to develop estimates, pursue projects, manage successful bids, and promote the company's products and services.

  • This position isn't simply a desk-based estimating or sales role.

  • To effectively understand the business, manage projects, communicate with customers, and sell the company's services, the successful candidate will initially spend time working alongside field and drilling crews.

During this field experience, you will develop a practical understanding of:

  • Drilling methods and processes

  • Equipment and tooling

  • Field operations

  • Job-site requirements

  • Safety considerations

  • The technical aspects of the company's services

  • That hands-on experience will ultimately help you become a stronger Estimator, Sales Engineer, and Project Leader.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Estimating & Project Development:

  • Prepare detailed job-cost estimates for competitive bidding.

  • Review project requirements and identify potential costs, risks, challenges, and opportunities.

  • Inspect job sites to evaluate potential hazards, difficulties, logistical considerations, and competitive advantages.

  • Meet with clients to discuss existing projects, upcoming opportunities, and future needs.

  • Process successful bid contracts from award through project completion.

  • Coordinate equipment submittals, safety plans, material purchasing, subcontractors, and project documentation.

  • Develop final project lists and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) manuals.

  • Create and maintain organized, professional, and profitable projects.

Technical Sales & Business Development:

  • Sell and promote company products and services to existing and prospective customers.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with municipalities, engineers, water operators, city/business managers, and community leaders.

  • Conduct sales calls through phone, email, virtual communication, and in-person meetings.

  • Identify new project opportunities and help expand the company's municipal and industrial customer base.

  • Prepare professional proposals, work orders, purchase orders, invoices, reports, and related documentation.

  • Work closely with the Sales Manager, Operations Manager, sales team, and field personnel.

Field & Project Support:

  • Provide supervision and oversight on job sites.

  • Work alongside service and drilling crews to develop hands-on knowledge of company operations.

  • Visit active and prospective job sites throughout the service territory.

  • Communicate effectively with field employees, customers, engineers, and other project stakeholders.

  • Help identify and resolve technical, operational, scheduling, and project-related challenges.

CUSTOMER & MARKET FOCUS:

The company's customer base is approximately:

  • 80% Municipalities 20% Heavy Industry

  • The strongest candidates will have experience working with municipal customers, particularly within the water industry.

  • Candidates with direct water well and/or pump experience are especially valuable.

  • For candidates who possess strong municipal sales experience but have limited water/well/pump knowledge, the company can provide assistance and training to help develop the technical side of the business.

TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Approximately 50% travel is required.

  • Travel patterns will vary depending on the season, project activity, and workload. This could include:

  • 2-3 days per week on the road, or

  • Alternating weeks of travel, depending on business needs.

The primary service territory includes:

Ohio | West Virginia | Kentucky | Indiana

  • Travel will primarily involve customer meetings, sales calls, estimating, project development, job-site inspections, and project supervision.

  • Some overnight travel will be required.

Due to the nature of the business, occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary.

IDEAL BACKGROUND:

  • The ideal candidate will typically have an educational or professional background in one or more of the following:

  • Civil Engineering

  • Agricultural Engineering

  • Construction Management

  • Geology

  • Water / Well / Pump Industry

  • Municipal Infrastructure

  • Construction Estimating

  • Technical Sales

  • Candidates with a strong municipal sales background-particularly within the water industry-are encouraged to apply.

  • Candidates with direct water well, pump, drilling, or related technical experience are highly valued.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 50%.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Clean driving record.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability and willingness to work in the field alongside service and drilling crews.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, customers, and priorities simultaneously.

Preferred:

  • 3+ years of water well or pump sales experience.

  • 3+ years of sales experience.

  • Experience selling to municipalities or government entities.

  • Water, well, pump, drilling, construction, engineering, or infrastructure experience.

  • Experience with estimating, project management, or construction operations.

  • Experience working with engineers, water operators, municipalities, or industrial customers.

SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE:

  • The successful candidate will be someone who can comfortably move between the office, job site, and customer meeting.

  • You should be comfortable:

  • Estimating → Selling → Inspecting → Coordinating → Problem Solving → Managing Projects → Building Relationships

  • Strong candidates will be technically curious, commercially minded, organized, self-motivated, and comfortable talking with everyone from field personnel and water operators to engineers, municipal leaders, and business executives.

  • Starting Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience
