MRI Technologist - Days, Evenings and Nights Available!

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth | Portsmouth, VA

We're seeking an experienced MRI Technologist to join the team at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. This is an excellent opportunity for an MRI professional who takes pride in patient care, MRI safety, and high-quality diagnostic imaging.

Available Schedules:

  • Part-Time Days: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
  • Part-Time Nights: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
  • Full-Time Evening: Monday-Friday - 2:30 PM-11:00 PM
  • Part-Time Evening: Wednesday - 2:30 PM-11:00 PM


What You'll Do

As an MRI Technologist, you'll be responsible for providing safe, high-quality MRI services while delivering exceptional patient care. Responsibilities include:

  • Perform comprehensive MRI examinations across a wide range of specialties, including brain, MRA/MRV, body, breast, cardiac, musculoskeletal, arthrograms, perfusion, spectroscopy, and 3D imaging.
  • Follow strict MRI safety and screening protocols, including patient identification, Time Out/Final Stop procedures, and ferromagnetic screening.
  • Research and document MRI safety information for implanted medical devices and coordinate appropriate safety clearances.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, including assessing contrast compatibility, reviewing allergies and contraindications, starting IVs, and helping patients manage anxiety or claustrophobia.
  • Coordinate MRI procedures requiring anesthesia or sedation and monitor patients, equipment, and vital signs within the MRI environment.
  • Respond appropriately to contrast reactions and clinical emergencies and participate in required emergency preparedness activities.
  • Review and enter radiologist protocols and help maintain standardized MRI protocols across scanners.
  • Operate and troubleshoot MRI equipment across multiple manufacturers and scanner models.
  • Verify image quality and ensure complete image transmission to PACS for radiologist review.
  • Perform daily equipment calibrations and quality-control procedures in accordance with ACR and Joint Commission standards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and fully stocked MRI environment while following all applicable safety, infection-control, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with radiologists, physicians, nurses, anesthesiology personnel, and other clinical staff to support excellent patient care.


What You'll Need

  • Graduate of an academic program accredited by JRCERT, COE, or an equivalent accrediting organization.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Radiologic Technologist or in the MRI specialty.
  • ARRT certification in MRI.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong understanding of MRI safety, patient care, imaging protocols, and emergency procedures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with patients and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Ability to provide two letters of recommendation dated within the past two years documenting clinical and patient-care skills. One letter must be from a practicing radiologist or supervisory technologist who has directly observed and evaluated your clinical skills.


Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience working within the VA/federal healthcare system is preferred but not required.
