Structural Layout Technician: Turning Drawings Into Fabrication-Ready Steel
Can you read a structural steel shop drawing, work accurately with measurements, and take pride in getting things right before fabrication begins?
Join Bens Structural Fabrication as a Structural Layout Technician, where youll turn shop drawings into accurate, fabrication-ready layouts on structural steel. Youll measure, mark, verify, and prepare steel components for production while working closely with our Structural Welders and production team to keep work moving safely and efficiently.
This is a great opportunity for someone with structural steel, welding, fabrication, construction, or industrial experience who has strong blueprint-reading and measurement skills and wants to continue developing their structural layout expertise.

What Youll Do
As a Structural Layout Technician I at Bens Structural Fabrication, you will be responsible for:
- Lay Out Structural Steel: Read shop drawings and accurately measure, mark, and lay out structural steel components for fabrication while maintaining exceptional dimensional accuracy.
- Read & Interpret Shop Drawings: Use shop drawings, dimensions, weld symbols, bills of material, and production documentation to determine layout requirements and support efficient fabrication.
- Verify Your Work: Confirm dimensions, material orientation, member identification, and fabrication requirements before production begins and identify discrepancies or quality concerns before they become downstream problems.
- Support Fabrication: Work closely with Structural Welders, Production Leads, and other team members to answer layout-related questions, support workflow, and keep fabrication moving efficiently.
- Operate Tools & Equipment Safely: Use measuring equipment, layout tools, overhead cranes, hand tools, and other assigned production equipment safely and effectively.
- Solve Problems: Identify drawing discrepancies, missing information, layout concerns, or potential fabrication issues and communicate them before work proceeds.
- Continue Building Your Skills: Develop greater proficiency in complex structural layout techniques, fabrication planning, constructability, and structural steel production.
- Support a Safe & Organized Shop: Maintain a clean, organized work area and contribute ideas that improve layout accuracy, workflow, safety, quality, and production efficiency.
Schedule
This is a full-time, hourly position.
Work is typically performed Monday through Thursday, 6:00 am 4:15 pm, with mandatory overtime on Fridays, 6:00 am 3:00 pm, if needed.
Pay Transparency Statement
In accordance with pay transparency guidelines, the anticipated pay range for this position is $23.00 to $30.00. This range is an estimate and not a guarantee. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and role requirements. Eligible employees may also participate in company benefit programs, subject to plan terms and employment status.

Position Requirements
Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, dimensions, and weld symbols.
- Ability to accurately measure and perform structural layout using standard measuring and layout tools.
- Ability to independently perform routine structural steel layout while maintaining quality, safety, and production expectations.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to dimensional accuracy.
- Ability to identify drawing discrepancies, layout concerns, and potential fabrication issues before production begins.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Bens Structural Fabrication authorization to operate overhead cranes.
Preferred
- One (1) to three (3) years of structural steel fabrication, welding, layout, manufacturing, construction, or related industrial experience.
- Technical diploma or certificate in Welding Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Drafting, Construction Technology, or a related skilled trade.
- Previous overhead crane experience in a production environment.
- Working knowledge of structural steel fabrication methods, layout practices, weld symbols, fabrication sequencing, and dimensional tolerances.
