The certified respiratory therapist assesses, treats, and monitors patients with respiratory diseases and conditions. This includes the delivery of medicated and non-medicated therapy as ordered by the provider. Additionally, therapists provide invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator support for acute respiratory failure. As part of patient assessment and management, the therapist performs diagnostic test procedures. In addition, therapists assist in departmental operations by addicting quality improvement projects, equipment, and supplies. The certified therapist follows all applicable rules and regulations established by the licensure board depending on the state in which respiratory therapy is practiced.

Job Responsibilities:
--35% Critical/Emergent Care:
-Responds to emergency situations throughout the facility, including code blue, and rapid response situations.
-Responds, attends, and provides appropriate patient support in high-risk delivery situations, including care of the compromised newborn.
-Airway management, including care and maintenance of endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes.
-Assess and monitor patients on invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support, adjusting parameters as ordered and to ensure optimum patient outcomes.
-Perform and/or assist with advanced specialty procedures such as endotracheal tube insertion, arterial line, and bronchoscopy.
--30% General Care:
-Performs provider prescribed medicated therapy including small volume nebulizer, and meter dose inhaler, utilizing safe medication administration standards.
-Performs provider prescribed therapeutic procedures such as chest physiotherapy, oscillating positive expiratory pressure, and positive expiratory pressure.
-Provides oxygen therapy, adjusting as appropriate for patient needs and provider order.
-Completes patient assessment and provides appropriate recommendations to providers.
-Provides education on therapy, respiratory disease, and medications to patients and significant others.
--15% Diagnostic Procedures:
-Specially trained and competent therapists complete pulmonary function testing as ordered, maintaining national standards for testing procedures.
-Specially trained and competent therapist neurodiagnostic studies such as electroencephalogram as ordered, maintaining national standards for testing procedures.
-Specially trained and competent therapists complete cardiac testing such as 12-lead electrocardiogram and holter monitoring.
-Perform arterial and capillary blood gas sampling.
-Analyze and interpret laboratory tests such as blood gases.
-Completes and documents oximetry studies
--10% Communication:
-Document patient assessment, therapy, and other pertinent patient information in the medical record.
-Verbally, provide pertinent patient information to others for on-going care and shared decision making, such as shift report and transfer to alternate level of care.
-Provides education to peers and students.
-Reviews and responses to departmental communication, including email.
-Participate in situational debriefs.
-Participates in on-going departmental and facility processes such as quality improvement, risk and safety.
-Attend and participate in departmental meetings including monthly department meetings, huddle board and in-services.
-Communicates with departmental leadership concerns, issues, and events.
--10% Equipment and Supply Management:
-Clean and prepare equipment for use, such as invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilators, and therapeutic gas delivery devices.
-Ensure proper functioning of departmental analyzers.
-Evaluate and communicate equipment or supply needs.
