Automotive Technician

Job Summary The Auto Technician performs routine maintenance and complex repairs while diagnosing mechanical issues to ensure vehicles operate safely and efficiently. Modern roles require equal parts physical mechanical work and advanced electronic troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnostics: Run computer diagnostics, read OBD-II error codes, and perform hands-on testing to identify engine, transmission, brake, or electrical failures.
• Routine Maintenance: Perform oil changes, tire rotations, fluid flushes, brake pad replacements, and wheel alignments.
• Repairs & Replacements: Remove and replace worn or defective parts (e.g., alternators, suspension components, timing belts, exhaust systems).
• Inspections: Conduct multi-point safety and emissions inspections to verify roadworthiness.
• Documentation & Communication: Clearly explain necessary repairs to service advisors or customers and document all work completed in service logs.

Qualifications & Skills

• High school diploma or GED; completion of a vocational/trade school automotive program preferred.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Familiarity with modern diagnostic software and power tools.
• ASE Certification (Automotive Service Excellence) is frequently required or preferred for advanced roles.

Work Environment Work is typically performed in repair shops, dealerships, or fleet facilities. Physical demands include standing for long periods, lifting heavy parts (up to 50+ lbs), working under vehicles, and handling solvents or lubricants safely.
