Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Poquoson, VA

Make an immediate impact as a full-time Sign Language Interpreter supporting a 1:1 educational setting with a third-grade student. This rewarding contract position, located near Poquoson, VA, offers the opportunity to empower a young learner to fully access classroom instruction and school activities. You’ll work onsite, supporting communication and inclusion, while collaborating closely with educational professionals to help ensure a positive learning experience.

Qualifications:

• Hold a minimum of VQAS Level 3 certification or higher (alternatively, a 3.5 EIPA and passing score on the written portion)
• Proven experience as a Sign Language Interpreter, preferably in a school or educational environment
• Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiar with Deaf culture and educational adaptations
• Ability to work effectively one-on-one with elementary-aged students
• Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical interpreting standards
• Strong interpersonal communication skills and a supportive, student-centered approach
• Availability for an ASAP start and willingness to be present onsite

Responsibilities:

• Provide clear, accurate ASL interpretation between the student and classroom peers or teachers in a variety of settings, including instructional, social, and extracurricular activities
• Adapt communication style to ensure comprehension and foster active student participation
• Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers to support IEP goals and classroom success
• Assist with classroom management related to interpreting and act as an advocate for accessibility when appropriate
• Track and report on the student’s communication progress and participate in educational planning meetings as needed
