Job Summary
The Driver Helper teams with a Route Driver to assist with the collection of waste and recyclable materials. This is a physically demanding, outdoor position requiring teamwork, reliability, and adherence to safety procedures.
Schedule & Start Date
- Start: Tomorrow morning; no need to wait for onboarding.
- Start time: Approximately 5:15 AM.
- Work is based on daily operational needs and is confirmed through a daily schedule sheet.
- Position is not guaranteed daily, but employees should expect approximately 3–4 days per week, with shifts lasting approximately 11 hours.
- Must be available and able to confirm availability for tomorrow morning.
Required: Steel-toed boots. Boots will be checked before the employee is assigned to a truck.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work in accordance with Waste Management Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA requirements, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws.
- Immediately report unsafe situations or service-related issues to the Route Manager or Dispatch.
- Attend and participate in required training programs, briefings, and meetings.
- Manually or mechanically load and empty residential and/or commercial waste and recycling containers into the truck.
- Service containers that may be staged curbside, dockside, or require carryout/pullout service.
- Operate hoisting equipment to lift and empty bins or containers into the truck hopper.
- Assist the Route Driver with all backing maneuvers while on route.
- Report all incidents, accidents, injuries, and property damage to the Route Manager.
- Notify the Route Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions, including:
- Closed or impassable streets or alleyways
- Receptacles that are too heavy to service
- Potential safety hazards
- Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or the Route Manager.
- Perform other duties as scheduled by the Route Manager or Dispatch.
- Assist other drivers as directed to meet customer service needs.
Qualifications
Required
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Less than 1 year of previous experience in the field.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Successfully complete:
- Pre-employment drug screening
- Physical examination
- Background check, including previous employment verification and criminal history
- Must have steel-toed boots.
Preferred
- Ability or willingness to acquire a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Physical Requirements
- Must have adequate motor coordination and dexterity in the arms, hands, fingers, and legs.
- Frequently handle objects weighing more than 25 pounds.
- Ability to push, pull, bend, twist, and lift up to 70 pounds.
- Position requires significant physical activity throughout the workday.
Work Environment
- Primarily works outdoors and/or rides in a video/GPS-monitored vehicle.
- Exposure to dirt, odors, noise, extreme weather conditions, and other similar environmental elements is expected for most of the workday.
- Physical demands may vary depending on the assigned site and route.

Candidates must be available to start tomorrow morning at approximately 5:15 AM and must be able to confirm their availability.
