Job Title: Machinist

Job Description

The Machinist sets up and verifies cutting tools, and performs a wide range of machining operations—including boring, drilling, milling, tapping, and threading—on raw materials to produce precision parts that meet exact engineering specifications, tolerances, and dimensions.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and verify cutting tools in accordance with specific machine and job requirements.
  • Perform conventional machining operations such as boring, drilling, milling, tapping, and threading on raw materials.
  • Machine parts to precise tolerances and dimensions as defined by engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Work with materials including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum to fabricate parts accurately.
  • Apply proper methods for processing materials and machining parts to minimize waste and prevent costly material losses.
  • Use appropriate shop practices and machining techniques to avoid machine delays and support certification efforts.
  • Operate conventional and computerized machining equipment, including mills and lathes, to complete assigned work.
  • Operate tool grinding equipment to maintain and prepare cutting tools as needed.
  • Inspect parts during and after machining to verify conformance to required specifications.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all shop safety procedures and guidelines.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of machining experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of conventional machining experience.
  • Working knowledge of the properties of mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum as they relate to part fabrication.
  • Thorough knowledge of proper methods for processing materials and machining parts to prevent material waste and machine delays.
  • Ability to operate conventional and computerized machining equipment, including mills and lathes.
  • Ability to operate tool grinding equipment.
  • Proficiency in machining operations such as boring, drilling, milling, tapping, and threading.
  • Ability to read and follow engineering specifications and tolerances.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience machining aluminum and other metals in a fabrication or job-shop environment.
  • Experience working with mills and conventional lathes.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise parts.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple machining tasks in a changing workload.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify and correct machining issues during setup and production.

Why Work Here?

You will work in an experimental department where every day brings new and interesting challenges, rather than repetitive production work. The environment emphasizes variety, craftsmanship, and continuous learning, allowing you to expand your machining skills while working on unique parts and projects.

Work Environment

The role is based in a non-climate-controlled facility, where conditions may vary with the seasons. The position is available on 3rd shift (Monday through Friday, approximately 11:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) or 2nd shift (Monday through Friday, approximately 3:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.). The dress code requires pants or shorts and a shirt; tank tops and cut-off shirts are not permitted.
