POSITION SUMMARY:

The Driver, under the direction of the Transportation Planner, is responsible for providing pre-arranged transportation for eligible tribal members to and from non-emergency medical appointments. This includes but not limited to transporting to hospitals, regional medical facilities, health clinics and doctor offices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles.                                
  • Reports on up-to date arrival and departure times as well as any accidents and passenger injuries with the Mobility Coordinator.                  
  • Instructs passengers regarding their safety responsibilities and secures personal assistive devices safely and efficiently.
  • Drives defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.                       
  • Performs vehicle housekeeping duties inside and out.          
  • Maintains vehicle maintenance records; services performed with dates, times, etc.
  • Ensures safety of all passengers who will be transported by the transportation program.
  • Physically assist or load ambulatory passengers on/off vehicle as necessary.                                                                   

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Attend required trainings, meetings, in-service workshops and seminars.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including occasional nights and weekends.

CONTACTS:           

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers and outside vendors/service providers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position very heavy with lifting objects over 100 pounds with frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds.  Physical factors include constant sitting, use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision and driving; frequent walking, lifting, reaching, occasional standing, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, manual handing, bending, use of smell and typing. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity; frequent exposure to vibration; occasional exposure to noise and air quality.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: No experience necessary.

Certification/License: First Aid and CPR certification is required within 90 days of hire and must be updated every two years. Passenger Assistance, Safety and Sensitivity (PASS) driver training within 30 days required. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in a tactful, patient and courteous manner. Manage emergency situations in a calm and courteous manner. Must be able to operate all vehicle types used in transporting tribal members to their destinations including 13-passenger handicap accessible vans. Must be willing to travel throughout the state of Michigan. Native American preferred. Drivers will physically assist and accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and strollers as needed with any transport of passengers. Must maintain strict confidentiality.
