Design QA/QC Lead - Overhead Distribution
Hybrid | Detroit, MI$85-$95/hr
Are you an experienced utility distribution engineer who enjoys reviewing designs, solving technical challenges, and improving quality rather than producing drawings all day?
We're seeking a Design QA/QC Lead to serve as the independent technical reviewer for overhead distribution and voltage conversion projects. This position provides quality oversight of engineering work packages before they move into construction, ensuring designs are accurate, compliant, safe, and constructible.
What You'll Do
  • Perform formal 30%, 60%, and 90% design reviews
  • Verify compliance with utility distribution standards and construction requirements
  • Review conductor sizing, transformer loading, grounding, clearances, pole loading, and protective device coordination
  • Evaluate constructability, safety considerations, and material lists
  • Support 4.8kV to 13.2kV conversion initiatives
  • Conduct occasional field visits to validate existing conditions
  • Document findings, standards exceptions, and corrective actions
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, standards, and external design firms
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related discipline
  • 6+ years of overhead distribution engineering, design, or construction experience
  • Strong understanding of utility distribution standards and NESC requirements
  • Experience reviewing engineering packages and identifying design defects
  • Ability to work independently and provide defensible technical recommendations
Preferred Experience
  • Utility QA/QC or technical review experience
  • Distribution voltage conversion projects
  • Pole loading or sag/tension analysis
  • Bluebeam, Maximo, or Documentum
  • PE License
