Job Title: CNC Setup Machinist

Job Description

The CNC Setup Machinist performs advanced machine setups, writes and modifies CNC programs, and operates CNC equipment to produce precision machined parts. In this role, you set up machines for production runs, optimize programs and cutting parameters, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure high-quality components. You work independently with minimal supervision, applying strong technical expertise and CNC programming skills to support efficient, reliable manufacturing in a high-mix environment.

Responsibilities

• Set up, load, and operate CNC machines according to job specifications and production requirements.
• Perform complex machine setups for production runs, including mill/turn, 3–5 axis, and horizontal machining centers.
• Set up fixturing using standard fixture hardware and design custom fixtures for specialized machining operations.
• Calibrate machines and verify setup accuracy before production to ensure repeatability and precision.
• Operate CNC equipment and continuously monitor production to maintain quality, efficiency, and throughput.
• Perform first article inspections and verify dimensional accuracy prior to full production.
• Write and modify CNC programs using G-code or CAM software such as Mastercam, ESPRIT, or similar tools.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to ensure accurate machining according to specifications.
• Optimize cutting parameters, feed rates, and tool paths to improve cycle times and reduce setup time.
• Troubleshoot programming errors and make real-time adjustments to programs and machine parameters.
• Collaborate with the team to keep machine templates up to date and maintain a clean, organized digital file archive.
• Monitor machine operations to detect and address issues or deviations from expected performance.
• Identify and resolve quality problems related to setup, tooling, and machine operation.
• Recommend and implement process improvements to increase throughput and reduce setup and changeover times.
• Conduct quality checks and measurements to ensure parts meet engineering drawings and GD&T specifications.
• Use precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, and other inspection tools for in-process inspections.
• Document quality issues and collaborate with the quality team to develop and support corrective actions.
• Perform routine maintenance on CNC machines to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, replacing cutting tools and consumables as needed.
• Maintain equipment calibration and accuracy, and coordinate with maintenance teams on major repairs and upgrades.
• Keep detailed maintenance logs and equipment records to support traceability and continuous improvement.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to CNC operators on machine operation, setup, and troubleshooting.
• Share technical knowledge, best practices, and process improvements with team members to support a continuous improvement culture.
• Demonstrate willingness to learn and take direction from experienced machinists while also mentoring others.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area that supports safe, efficient, and high-quality production.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, and promote a safety-focused mindset within the team.

Essential Skills

• Must have at least 5+ years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated experience with mill/turn machines, with the ability to provide backup and coverage for these operations.
• Hands-on experience with 3–5 axis and horizontal machining centers.
• Strong CNC programming skills using G-code and familiarity with CAM software such as Mastercam, ESPRIT, or similar.
• Advanced knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and the ability to apply it in machining and inspection.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints accurately.
• Proficiency in setting up fixturing, including standard fixture hardware and custom fixture design.
• Excellent mechanical aptitude with strong troubleshooting skills for both machine and process issues.
• High attention to detail with a strong commitment to quality, precision, and pride in workmanship.
• Safety-focused work habits with consistent adherence to protocols and procedures.
• Ability to work independently as a self-starter and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Preferred 7+ years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment; 8+ years is a strong plus.
• Technical certification or associate degree in machining or a related field.
• Experience with multiple CNC machine types, including mills, lathes, and multi-axis equipment.
• Experience in contract manufacturing or high-mix production environments.
• Knowledge of fixture design and tooling optimization to support efficient setups and changeovers.
• Training or experience in Six Sigma or Lean manufacturing methodologies.
• Forklift certification is a plus for material handling and shop support.
• Experience maintaining organized digital file archives for programs, templates, and setup documentation.
• Willingness to mentor and train others, sharing knowledge to support team development.

Work Environment

The role is based in a modern manufacturing environment that specializes in producing high-quality components through additive manufacturing (3D printing), CNC machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, powder coating, and assembly. You collaborate closely with design engineers, product developers, operations engineers, and product concept teams, supporting a wide range of innovative projects. The position follows a day shift schedule from 6:15 AM to 2:45 PM, providing consistent daytime hours. The facility emphasizes safety, organization, and cleanliness, with well-maintained CNC equipment and supporting technologies designed to enable precise, efficient production.

This is a Contract position based out of Seattle, WA.

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $40.00/hr.
