Job Title: R&D Sr Technician
Job Description
The R&D Sr Technician supports the development and improvement of innovative healthcare products by performing analytical laboratory testing, product-development experiments, equipment validations, and data analysis. This role conducts wet chemistry and instrumental laboratory work, prepares chemical solutions, tests development and manufactured products against established specifications, and maintains accurate documentation in accordance with cGMP and good documentation practices. The position works closely with technicians, engineers, and scientists in a multidisciplinary environment to advance research, product development, and process-improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Perform experiments for product-development research projects under limited supervision, following established laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Conduct analytical testing to evaluate the chemical, biological, and physical characteristics of solid, liquid, and gaseous materials.
- Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of laboratory equipment and analytical instruments, ensuring proper use and performance.
- Perform volumetric pipetting, solution preparation, and related laboratory calculations with a high degree of accuracy.
- Test development and manufactured products to verify conformity with established specifications and quality standards.
- Assist with qualitative and statistical data analysis, including trend analysis and interpretation of experimental results.
- Prepare clear technical reports summarizing experimental results, including the creation of graphs, charts, and other data visualizations.
- Present project and research updates during laboratory and R&D meetings as needed to communicate progress and findings.
- Assist with the development and optimization of new laboratory techniques and test methods to improve testing capabilities.
- Perform and maintain validations for new or existing equipment, test methods, and test systems in accordance with validation requirements.
- Write and revise Standard Operating Procedures, test methods, and other controlled laboratory documents to ensure accurate and current guidance.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, verification, and calibration of laboratory equipment to maintain reliability and compliance.
- Record test results on standardized forms and maintain laboratory notebooks in accordance with cGMP and good documentation practices.
- Assist laboratory leadership with organizing testing schedules and supporting the efficient operation of the laboratory.
- Maintain inventories of chemicals, reagents, equipment, and developmental materials to ensure adequate supplies for ongoing work.
- Identify testing or operational issues, recommend practical solutions, and escalate complex concerns when necessary.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to junior laboratory staff as appropriate to support their development and ensure high-quality work.
- Maintain an orderly, clean, and safe laboratory and warehouse environment in alignment with safety and housekeeping standards.
- Follow all applicable company policies, laboratory procedures, safety requirements, and regulatory standards at all times.
Essential Skills
- At least one year of analytical laboratory experience performing wet chemistry or directly related work.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry; an associate degree may be considered with extensive directly related laboratory experience.
- Completed college coursework in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry or quantitative analysis.
- Hands-on experience in an instrument laboratory, including volumetric pipetting and performing related calculations.
- Experience setting up, adjusting, operating, maintaining, and calibrating analytical laboratory equipment and general laboratory instruments.
- Ability to prepare chemical solutions accurately according to standard formulas and documented procedures.
- Experience performing laboratory experiments and testing products against established specifications and quality criteria.
- Strong documentation skills, including maintaining laboratory notebooks, completing standardized forms, and writing technical reports and SOPs.
- Ability to analyze experimental data and communicate findings clearly through written reports, graphs, and charts.
- Strong mathematical aptitude, including basic algebra, unit conversions, mass calculations, surface-area calculations, and measurement techniques.
- Ability to interpret instructions provided in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule formats.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and work with minimal supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective documentation and collaboration.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Two to three years of analytical laboratory experience in addition to the minimum requirements.
- Hands-on experience with HPLC, LC-MS, and/or gas chromatography (GC) instrumentation.
- Experience performing equipment validations and test-method validations.
- Experience with statistical analysis, trend analysis, and technical data reporting.
- Familiarity with cGMP requirements and regulated laboratory documentation practices.
- Experience supporting research, product development, or process-improvement projects.
- Previous experience working with medical devices or healthcare-related products.
- Knowledge of test method development and optimization in an analytical laboratory setting.
- Comfort presenting technical information and project updates in group or meeting settings.
Work Environment
This role is based in an onsite manufacturing and R&D laboratory environment in Ogden, Utah. The position operates within a hands-on laboratory setting that involves frequent use of analytical instruments and general laboratory equipment for wet chemistry and instrumental analysis. The standard work schedule is a 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, with daily hours that may start as early as 7:00 a.m. and extend as late as 7:00 p.m., with the final schedule to be discussed during the interview and offer stage. Work is performed in a controlled laboratory environment that emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to cGMP and regulatory standards. Employees follow established laboratory procedures, safety requirements, and good documentation practices while working with chemicals, reagents, and developmental materials. The role is part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team focused on research and product development. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $32.00/hr.
