Location: Syracuse VA Medical Center – Syracuse, NY
Facility: Department of Veterans Affairs, Syracuse VA Medical Center
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
Position: Interventional Radiologist – On-Site & On-Call Coverage
Employment Type: Contract / 1099
Position Overview
We are seeking a Board Certified Interventional Radiologist to provide on-site and on-call Interventional Radiology services for Veterans at the Syracuse VA Medical Center.
The physician will provide a broad range of Interventional Radiology procedures and clinical services consistent with the standards of a state-of-the-art medical facility and applicable American College of Radiology (ACR) guidelines. Approximately 95% of the position is dedicated to direct patient care.
Responsibilities
The Interventional Radiologist will be responsible for:
- Providing on-site Interventional Radiology services Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
- Providing on-call coverage during evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Performing a broad range of Interventional Radiology procedures, including:
- Angiography
- Balloon angioplasty and stent placement
- Biliary interventions
- CT-guided and ultrasound-guided biopsies
- Central line insertion and assessment
- Chemoembolization
- Dialysis access and related interventions
- Drain and tube insertions/exchanges, including biliary, nephrostomy, chest, NU stent, cholecystostomy, abscess, and suprapubic procedures
- Embolization
- Joint injections
- IVC filter placement
- Lumbar punctures
- Myelograms
- Paracentesis
- Radiologically inserted gastrostomy
- Thoracentesis
- Vertebroplasty
- Reviewing consults and next-day cases, including pre-procedure planning and order prioritization
- Providing post-procedure evaluation and follow-up
- Managing and consulting on complications related to Interventional Radiology procedures
- Consulting with referring physicians regarding appropriate indications and treatment plans
- Communicating clinically appropriate recommendations with referring providers
- Providing discharge education and follow-up instructions when appropriate
- Maintaining timely and accurate documentation in the VA medical record
- Following VA policies, procedures, medical staff bylaws, and applicable patient privacy requirements
- Maintaining required moderate sedation privileges
The solicitation specifies that the physician's scope of care includes the procedures listed above and that services should meet or exceed applicable ACR standards.
Schedule & Call
Regular On-Site Schedule:
- Monday–Friday
- 8:00 AM–4:30 PM
- 1.0 FTE / 2,080 hours annually
On-Call Coverage:
- Weekdays: 4:30 PM–12:00 AM
- Weekends and holidays: 8:00 AM–8:00 PM
- On-call physicians must remain available for telephone consultation with VA physicians.
The position may also require supplemental same-day on-site coverage when the VA Interventional Radiology attending is unavailable. The solicitation states that a contract physician may be required to report on-site within two hours of notification for same-day supplemental coverage.
Qualifications
- M.D. or D.O.
- Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology
- Current, full and unrestricted New York medical license
- ACR-accredited in Interventional Radiology
- Technically proficient in the skills necessary to perform the required Interventional Radiology services
- Fluent in English
- Current required certifications and training, including ACLS/BLS
- Current DEA registration
- NPI required
- Eligible to obtain and maintain VA credentialing and clinical privileges
- Must be able to obtain all required VA training and credentialing prior to providing patient care
The solicitation specifically requires a current, full and unrestricted New York license and ABR Board Certification, with credentialing and privileging completed before the physician may provide services.
Credentialing & Compliance
Selected physicians will be required to complete the VA credentialing and privileging process and comply with applicable VA training requirements. Required documentation may include verification of licensure, board certification, CME, NPI, DEA, and other applicable credentials.
Physicians must also comply with VA infection-control, privacy/HIPAA, patient-safety, and mandatory training requirements.
Contract Details
- Location: Syracuse VA Medical Center, 800 Irving Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13210
- Base Period: November 1, 2026 – October 31, 2027
- Options: Four additional one-year option periods
- Position: 1.0 FTE on-site Interventional Radiology coverage plus on-call coverage
- Contract Type: Independent contractor
- Travel/Lodging: The solicitation states that contractor rates are to be all-inclusive of travel and lodging.
