Aquinas Consulting is currently looking to fill an Engineer in Charge job in Williamsburg, VA. This direct-hire job is available with one of our key customers in the telecommunications and subsea fiber optic cable industry. In this role, you will lead the engineering and implementation of deep-sea cable installations and cable repair operations, directing cable engineers, cable jointers, and transmission engineers on activities associated with submarine cable systems. To be successful in this position, you must have in-depth knowledge of shore end installations, deep-sea installations, vessel loading, route clearance operations, post-lay inspection and burial operations, and cable repair operations. This position requires substantial domestic and international travel, including extended assignments at shore end landing sites and aboard cable-laying vessels, as well as strong project management and customer coordination skills.

Engineer in Charge Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead project-specific planning, including drafting and reviewing technical specifications and methods of procedure for cable loading, installation, and repair activities.
  • Take charge of customer-furnished vessel mobilization and demobilization, including the loading and offloading of cable and electronic equipment.
  • Serve as the onboard lead for technical matters related to cable installation and repair while supervising deck operations and instructing marine crews on cable rigging requirements.
  • Interface frequently with customers, including leading pre-sail project reviews and post-operation hot wash summaries, while coordinating with cable engineering, cable jointing, logistics, underwater vehicle, and acquisition teams.
  • Lead internal and external training on cable engineering functions, including Makai, WinFrog, and general cable ship procedures, with potential supervisory responsibilities for company personnel.

Qualifications:

  • College degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related science is preferred; cable engineering or operational experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Basic engineering, mathematics, and computer skills, along with an understanding of undersea cable mechanics and principles.
  • In-depth knowledge of Makai Lay and WinFrog navigation software is desirable, as well as charting and mapping skills.
  • Must be willing and able to work in cable tanks, ISO containers, and cable depot cable pans to assist with loading and offloading customer cables and electronics.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with the ability to pass a Fit for Duty physical and certified STCW Basic Safety Training class, and travel at least 50% of the time to remote locations.
