Job Description

This role focuses on providing daily, hands-on manufacturing engineering support in a CNC machining environment, with an emphasis on very small, high-precision components. You will spend the majority of your time on the shop floor troubleshooting issues, driving process improvements, and implementing manufacturing changes, while also maintaining accurate engineering and manufacturing documentation. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with production teams, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and occasionally lead special projects that enhance quality, efficiency, and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Spend approximately 75% of working time on the shop floor and 25% in the office to provide direct support to manufacturing operations.
• Troubleshoot manufacturing issues in real time, identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
• Develop, refine, and implement process improvements to enhance productivity, quality, and repeatability of manufacturing operations.
• Make and validate manufacturing changes to support new products, process optimizations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Support the production of very small components, ensuring processes and methods consistently meet tight tolerances and quality requirements.
• Collaborate closely with production, quality, and engineering teams to resolve technical issues and improve manufacturing outcomes.
• Document process changes thoroughly and ensure all engineering and manufacturing documentation remains accurate and up to date.
• Apply GD&T principles to interpret engineering drawings and ensure manufacturing processes align with design intent.
• Participate in or lead occasional special projects focused on process development, new equipment or tooling introduction, and capability improvements.
• Monitor and evaluate existing manufacturing processes, recommending enhancements to reduce waste, improve throughput, and maintain high standards of safety and quality.

Essential Skills

• 5–7 years of manufacturing engineering experience, with flexibility depending on overall experience and capability.
• Proven experience working in a CNC machining environment, supporting production and process development.
• Strong hands-on experience supporting manufacturing operations directly on the shop floor.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot manufacturing issues and implement effective process improvements and changes.
• Comfort working extensively on the shop floor, engaging with equipment, processes, and production personnel.
• Experience or familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) for interpreting and applying engineering drawings.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) processes.
• Exposure to abrasive flow or media flow polishing processes, such as AFM-type processes.
• Experience in tight or high-tolerance grinding operations.
• AutoCAD or other CAD/design software experience for reviewing, modifying, or developing engineering drawings and layouts.
• Experience working with very small components and precision manufacturing environments.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and structured problem-solving methodologies.

Work Environment

The work environment combines a high level of shop-floor engagement with a smaller portion of office-based engineering work. Approximately three-quarters of the role is performed on the manufacturing floor, working directly with CNC machines, precision equipment, and processes used to produce very small, high-tolerance components. The remaining time is spent in an office setting focused on documentation, process planning, and collaboration with engineering and support teams. You will operate in a precision manufacturing environment that emphasizes quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement, using tools such as GD&T and CAD software to align manufacturing processes with engineering intent. The role requires comfort in a production setting around machinery, tooling, and inspection equipment, and the ability to move between the shop floor and office as needed to support daily operations.

This is a Contract position based out of Pontiac, IL.

The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $33.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
