Job Description
The Transportation Engineer is responsible for planning, organizing, and developing engineering activities related to the construction and maintenance of transportation and infrastructure facilities, including roads, railroads, bridges, and water systems. This role focuses on design engineering for a wide range of transportation projects, often involving state and local agencies, and requires the preparation of detailed designs using MicroStation and Geopak. The engineer will devise new approaches to complex problems, ensure compliance with applicable codes and accepted engineering practices, and occasionally travel to local job sites to provide oversight. Responsibilities- Plan, organize, and develop engineering activities for the construction and maintenance of transportation and infrastructure facilities, including roads, railroads, bridges, and water systems.
- Perform design engineering on a variety of transportation projects, including work with state departments of transportation, tollway authorities, and counties or municipalities.
- Prepare detailed designs using MicroStation and Geopak, including roadway and highway design elements.
- Devise new approaches and solutions to engineering problems and challenges encountered in transportation projects.
- Prepare or modify engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, and graphs to support project design and documentation.
- Monitor project work to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and accepted engineering practices.
- Provide occasional oversight at local job sites, including site visits to review construction progress and adherence to design plans.
- Collaborate effectively with other team members to deliver high-quality transportation engineering solutions.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with clients in person and over the phone regarding project requirements, progress, and technical issues.
- Support a culture of careful and deliberate growth by contributing to an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing team environment.
- Participate in training and mentorship opportunities with senior engineers to further develop professional skills and progress toward professional licensure.
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil Engineering.
- Current Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- At least 3 years of transportation project experience.
- Proficiency in MicroStation and/or Geopak for transportation and roadway design.
- Experience working on projects with state departments of transportation, tollway authorities, or municipalities.
- Strong background in transportation engineering, including roadway and highway design.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other team members on multidisciplinary projects.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients on the phone and in person.
- Solid understanding of applicable engineering codes, standards, and accepted practices.
- Experience in transportation design for agencies such as IDOT and ISTHA, as well as various counties and municipalities.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles related to roadway design, transportation systems, and infrastructure.
- Ability to devise innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.
- Interest in training under senior engineers to further develop expertise and advance toward or within PE licensure.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $118000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
