Job Description
Our client is a multi-disciplinary design firm committed to providing creative and practical design solutions for today's challenging environments. Their team includes Civil Engineers, Landscape Architects, Planners, Security Consultants, and Surveyors who work collaboratively in a professional and supportive environment.
They are seeking a Project Surveyor / Senior Project Surveyor with a minimum of 5+ years of dedicated land survey drafting experience to join their Chantilly, VA office.
This position is responsible for transforming raw field data, survey notes, legal descriptions, and record information into accurate technical drawings, maps, and official survey plats.
The ideal candidate will have advanced CAD drafting skills combined with a strong understanding of land surveying, geomatics, property boundaries, and civil infrastructure.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesSurvey Drafting & DeliverablesPrepare accurate and detailed survey documents, including:
Boundary Surveys
Topographic Surveys
ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys
Subdivision Plats
As-Built Surveys
Easement and Right-of-Way Exhibits
Transform field survey information into precise technical drawings and legal survey documents.
Ensure survey deliverables meet project specifications and applicable standards.
Import, reduce, and manage electronic field data, including CSV files, GPS coordinates, and data collector files.
Process digital terrain models (DTM), surfaces, contours, and related survey information.
Convert field data into accurate CAD drawings and survey deliverables.
Research and interpret public land records, deeds, historical plats, land titles, and municipal right-of-way information.
Assist in establishing property boundaries and resolving discrepancies.
Review historical survey information and other available records to support boundary determinations.
Read, interpret, and prepare metes-and-bounds legal descriptions.
Support land acquisition, easement, and right-of-way projects through accurate legal documentation.
Review and revise drawings based on QA/QC redlines, reviewer comments, and municipal feedback.
Ensure drawings comply with applicable local ordinances, state drafting standards, and company procedures.
Maintain a high level of accuracy and consistency across all survey deliverables.
Work closely with field survey crews to clarify field notes and resolve data-related questions.
Coordinate with project engineers, surveyors, and other design professionals.
Support project teams in meeting technical requirements and project deadlines.
Maintain organized digital drawing files, project folders, and survey reference information.
Archive project data and maintain accurate records for future retrieval.
Utilize document and data management systems such as Autodesk Vault.
Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Strong ability to create, modify, and manage complex survey drawings and technical documentation.
Strong understanding of land surveying and geomatics principles.
Knowledge of civil infrastructure elements and their relationship to survey data.
Understanding of property boundaries, topography, easements, and right-of-way concepts.
Ability to accurately read and interpret:
Engineering plans
Legal descriptions
Historical deeds
Survey plats
Field sketches
Survey field data
High level of precision when working with measurements, mathematical calculations, coordinates, boundaries, and technical drawings.
Strong visual and technical drafting skills.
Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to coordinate effectively with field crews, surveyors, engineers, office management, and municipal personnel.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Capable of working under tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Minimum of 5+ years of dedicated land survey drafting experience within a civil engineering or surveying firm.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Associate degree or technical certificate in Drafting/CAD, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field is highly preferred.
