Special Education Teacher
Hourly Rate: $40.00 – $45.00 per hour, depending on experience and assignment
Location: Surprise, AZ; In-Person
Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and case management to students with disabilities in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Working collaboratively with general education teachers, related service providers, school administrators, families, and support staff, the teacher helps ensure students receive meaningful access to the curriculum in the least restrictive environment while promoting academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth.
Responsibilities
Key Duties
- Provide specialized instruction aligned with each student's IEP goals and Arizona Academic Standards
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with the IEP team
- Conduct ongoing assessments and collect data to monitor student progress and guide instructional decisions
- Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student success
- Create a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and independence
- Implement accommodations, modifications, and evidence-based instructional strategies to meet individual student needs
- Supervise and provide direction to paraprofessionals and instructional assistants as appropriate
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress reports, IEP records, and required compliance paperwork
- Participate in IEP meetings, professional development, department meetings, and other school-related activities
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, goals, and educational programming
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building administrator or Special Education administration
Requirements
Education
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field
- Preferred: Master's degree
Licenses & Certifications
- Required: Valid Arizona Special Education Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement
- Required: Cross-Categorical Special Education endorsement or other applicable Arizona certification
Skills
- Minimum of one year of school-based experience (preferred)
- Knowledge of federal and Arizona special education laws, regulations, and IEP procedures
- Ability to develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Strong classroom management, collaboration, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, families, and district staff
- Proficiency with educational technology and documentation systems
