Phlebotomist - Days

This role focuses on obtaining and processing blood and nonblood specimens to support accurate and timely laboratory testing in a busy hospital environment. You will collect specimens from patients across the hospital, including very sick, geriatric, and some pediatric patients, and ensure all samples are properly prepared for in-house and reference laboratory testing. • Obtain blood specimens through venipuncture and other phlebotomy techniques from patients throughout the hospital.
• Collect nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
• Perform screening tests on collected specimens and promptly report results according to laboratory protocols.
• Process specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and storage.
• Prepare specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories, following all packaging, documentation, and transport requirements.
• Travel between patient rooms and units across the hospital to complete specimen collections, including from very sick, geriatric, and some pediatric patients.
• Maintain a high level of patient care, comfort, and professionalism during all specimen collection procedures.
• Handle a high daily volume of blood draws, including an average of approximately 50 sticks per day on day shift, 35 on evening shift, and 25–30 during the first four hours of the night shift.
• Respond to codes, rapid responses, and other urgent clinical situations to obtain timely blood samples, including arterial blood gases (ABGs) when required.
• Follow all hospital and laboratory safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures.
• Accurately document all collections, tests, and processes in the appropriate systems and logs.
• Collaborate closely with nursing, medical, and laboratory staff to ensure efficient and accurate specimen collection and processing.
• Support specialized units, including a burn unit and limited pediatric areas, by performing precise and careful specimen collection.
• Manage workload effectively across rotating shifts and weekends while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

• Demonstrated phlebotomy experience with strong venipuncture skills and the ability to perform a high volume of daily blood draws (“sticks”).
• Proficiency in blood collection and handling, including accurate labeling, specimen identification, and adherence to laboratory protocols.
• Experience collecting nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
• Phlebotomy certification.
• Ability to perform screening tests on collected specimens and report results accurately.
• Capability to prepare and process specimens for both in-house and reference laboratory testing.
• Comfort working with very sick, geriatric, and some pediatric patients in a hospital setting.
• Ability to respond to codes, ABGs, and rapid situations, obtaining timely and accurate blood samples under pressure.
• Physical ability to walk throughout the hospital and remain on your feet for the entire shift.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to safety and infection control procedures.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills to work closely with clinical and laboratory staff.
• Reliability and flexibility to work rotating shifts and every other weekend.

• Experience working in a busy hospital laboratory or inpatient setting.
• Familiarity with arterial blood gas (ABG) collections and responding to rapid response or code situations.
• Experience working with burn unit patients and limited pediatric populations.

This position is based in a busy hospital laboratory and inpatient setting, supporting a wide range of units including the only burn unit in the area and a small number of pediatric patients. You will frequently move throughout the hospital, visiting patient rooms and units, and will be on your feet for most of your shift. The schedule includes rotating weekends, with one consistent weekday off each week to provide a predictable routine. Shifts may include overnight (11:00 PM–7:30 AM), evening (12:00 PM–8:30 PM), and days/early morning (4:00 AM–12:30 PM), with every other weekend required. Daily workload expectations include an average of about 50 blood draws on day shift, 35 on evening shift, and 25–30 during the first four hours of the night shift. The environment is fast-paced and clinically focused, with frequent exposure to very sick adult patients and occasional pediatric patients. You may be called to respond to codes, rapid responses, and ABG collections, requiring calm performance under pressure. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tulsa, OK.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
