Position Overview

The Materials Specialist is responsible for end-to-end inventory management, material flow, and logistics support within a 24/7 shop environment. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate inventory control, timely material availability, and efficient coordination of inbound and outbound shipments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage inventory control processes, including cycle counts and stock accuracy
  • Pull and issue materials for shop use, ensuring proper documentation (serial numbers, position, service data)
  • Monitor and manage stockouts, including tracking ETAs for critical parts
  • Forecast material requirements for inbound and in-shop locomotives
  • Perform quality checks on inbound/outbound shipments and resolve discrepancies
  • Coordinate LTL and expedited shipments; ensure proper documentation (BOLs, customs paperwork)
  • Utilize systems (e.g., Oracle) to track, receive, ship, and manage materials, including hazardous goods
  • Operate forklifts and perform daily equipment inspections
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings to determine material requirements
  • Process material sales, warranty claims, and repair cycle assets
  • Maintain warehouse organization, restocking, and housekeeping standards
  • Support physical inventory counts and reporting on inventory metrics
  • Respond to material requests from service shops and ensure accurate order fulfillment
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and wear required PPE


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED or 2+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in logistics, warehouse, or shipping/receiving environments
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations
  • Previous forklift operation experience
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Reliable attendance and a team-oriented mindset
  • Flexibility to work various shifts as needed


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Oracle)
  • Familiarity with inventory control metrics and reporting
  • Ability to read technical/mechanical drawings
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills


Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged standing and walking on hard or uneven surfaces
  • Ability to climb stairs and access locomotives
  • Work in tight or confined spaces when required
  • Lift, move, and handle materials throughout the shift
  • Ability to work consecutive shifts, including evenings or overnight as needed
  • Consistent use of PPE (hard hat, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, ear protection)
  • Frequent computer use and communication


Additional Information

  • Must be adaptable to a fast-paced, industrial environment
  • May be required to perform additional duties outside primary responsibilities with proper training
