Shop Floor Manager – Second Shift (4:30 PM - 3:00 AM)

Position Summary

McDaniel Metals is seeking an experienced Shop Floor Manager – Second Shift to provide hands-on leadership and oversight of production operations across our 2nd shift Fallbrook facility production.


This position is responsible for coordinating production personnel and workflow across assigned departments involved in the fabrication, welding, assembly, insulation, and packaging of custom HVAC curb adapters and related sheet metal products.


The Shop Floor Manager is accountable for safety, quality, productivity, staffing, workflow, and employee performance throughout the shift while ensuring production schedules and customer requirements are met. This role provides leadership to departmental Leads and production employees and serves as the primary management presence on the shop floor during second shift.

The position works closely with Production Management, Planning, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, Shipping, and HR to maintain efficient and consistent manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Operations Leadership

  • Oversee daily second-shift operations across three assigned production departments.
  • Coordinate staffing, labor allocation, and workflow based on production priorities and scheduled requirements.
  • Monitor production progress throughout the shift and adjust resources as necessary to meet deadlines.
  • Monitor productivity, throughput, scrap, rework, downtime, and other operational performance indicators.
  • Ensure employees have the materials, drawings, tooling, and equipment necessary to perform assigned work.
  • Identify and resolve production bottlenecks and escalate significant operational issues when necessary.
  • Ensure an effective handoff of production status, priorities, and outstanding issues between shifts.

Leadership & Employee Management

  • Provide direct leadership, coaching, and accountability to departmental Leads and hourly production employees.
  • Set clear expectations regarding attendance, productivity, quality, safety, and workplace conduct.
  • Ensure Leads are effectively directing employees and communicating production priorities.
  • Support employee onboarding, training, cross-training, and development.
  • Address employee performance or conduct concerns promptly and partner with HR when corrective action is appropriate.
  • Promote professional communication, teamwork, and accountability throughout the shift.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure products are manufactured according to engineering drawings, specifications, SOPs, and established quality standards.
  • Work with Quality and production leadership to identify and reduce defects, scrap, and rework.
  • Ensure employees follow approved manufacturing processes and do not deviate from established procedures without authorization.
  • Reinforce proper inspection and quality-verification practices throughout production.
  • Maintain accurate production, training, and other required documentation.

Safety

  • Enforce company safety policies, PPE requirements, equipment procedures, and applicable OSHA requirements.
  • Address unsafe behaviors and conditions immediately.
  • Conduct or support shift safety meetings and safety communications.
  • Ensure production areas remain clean, organized, and compliant with established housekeeping and 5S expectations.
  • Participate in incident and near-miss investigations and implementation of corrective actions.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, productivity, labor utilization, quality, and manufacturing processes.
  • Work with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Planning, and Maintenance to address recurring production issues.
  • Support Lean manufacturing, 5S, standard work, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Promote standardized processes and accountability across all assigned departments.

Equipment & Maintenance Coordination

  • Coordinate with Maintenance regarding equipment failures, downtime, repairs, and preventive maintenance needs.
  • Ensure employees operate machinery and equipment safely and according to established procedures.
  • Communicate equipment issues that could affect production schedules or product quality.
  • Support efforts to maximize equipment availability and minimize production downtime.

Performance Expectations

Performance will be evaluated based on established operational goals, including:

  • Achievement of production schedules and on-time completion targets.
  • Productivity and labor-efficiency performance.
  • Quality performance, including reduction of defects, scrap, and rework.
  • Compliance with safety and PPE requirements.
  • Effective management of staffing and workflow across assigned departments.
  • Employee training, cross-training, and development.
  • Timely identification and escalation of production or equipment issues.
  • Accurate production reporting and effective shift-to-shift communication.
  • Maintenance of organized, safe, and audit-ready production areas.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of manufacturing experience in sheet metal fabrication, HVAC manufacturing, welding, or a related production environment.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multiple teams, departments, or production functions.
  • Working knowledge of fabrication, welding, assembly, and manufacturing workflows.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, production specifications, and work instructions.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing production demands and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to hold employees and Leads accountable while maintaining professional working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HVAC manufacturing or custom curb adapter fabrication experience.
  • Experience managing second- or third-shift manufacturing operations.
  • Experience supervising multiple production departments simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing, 5S, standard work, and continuous-improvement principles.
  • Experience using ERP/MRP systems and production reporting tools.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to spend extended periods working on the production floor.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout manufacturing areas for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work around manufacturing machinery, welding operations, forklifts, moving equipment, noise, and varying temperatures.
  • Must be available to work the established second-shift schedule and additional hours as operational needs require.
