Position Overview

We are seeking a Wastewater Collections Operator-In-Training to support the operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of a wastewater collection system.

This is a hands-on field position working alongside experienced Collections Operators. The role will provide training and practical experience with sewer cleaning and clearing equipment, collection system maintenance, preventive maintenance, bar screen facilities, equipment troubleshooting, and wastewater collection operations.

A valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required at the time of hire.

The selected candidate will also be required to obtain the NJDEP Collections C1 Operator License within two years of hire.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist experienced Collections Operators with the operation of sewer cleaning, clearing, and rodding equipment.
• Support repairs and maintenance activities throughout the wastewater collection system.
• Assist with cleaning and maintaining bar screen facilities.
• Perform weekly preventive maintenance on collection system equipment as assigned.
• Learn to safely operate and maintain a variety of tools, vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
• Assist with diagnosing basic wastewater collection system issues.
• Read and interpret sewer maps, construction plans, drawings, specifications, and Operations & Maintenance manuals.
• Follow oral and written instructions accurately.
• Maintain maintenance and operational records using a CMMS system.
• Prepare spreadsheets and use Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation and reporting.
• Complete Activity Hazard Analyses and Pre-Task Plans.
• Maintain professional and cooperative relationships with coworkers, contractors, and others encountered during operations.
• Follow all applicable safety, environmental, and operating procedures.
• Perform additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) required at hire.
• Ability to work outdoors and in a hands-on industrial environment.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Basic computer skills and willingness to learn CMMS and Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of wastewater collection systems and associated tools, equipment, and materials.
• Previous experience in water, wastewater treatment, wastewater collections, or utility operations.
• Experience with sewer maintenance or collection system equipment.
• OSHA safety training, including Confined Space Entry and Lockout/Tagout.
• NJDEP C1 Operator License or progress toward obtaining the credential.

NJDEP C1 License Requirement

The selected candidate must obtain the NJDEP Collections C1 Operator License within two years of their hire date.

Training materials, the first examination, and required continuing training hours for maintaining the license are covered by the employer. Candidates are responsible for the time required to attend the course.

On-Call Requirement

After training, the employee will be added to the on-call rotation.

• On-call period: Friday at 3:30 PM through the following Friday at 3:30 PM
• Employees receive 4 hours of overtime pay per week for being on call.
• Any required call-outs are paid as overtime.

Physical & Work Environment

This position may involve working both indoors and outdoors and exposure to:

• Weather and outdoor environmental conditions.
• Loud noise and operating machinery.
• High-pressure fluid systems.
• Electrical equipment.
• Confined spaces.
• Heights and depths.
• Fumes, airborne particles, noxious gases, pathogens, and various chemicals.
• Appropriate PPE and safety equipment are mandatory when working in hazardous areas.

The employee must be able to:

• Sit, stand, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, and squat.
• Reach and raise arms above shoulder height.
• Perform repetitive hand movements and fine motor tasks.
• Operate and work around equipment and piping.
• Walk throughout the facility during an 8-hour shift.
• Ascend and descend stairs.
• Lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. from floor level to waist height.
• Carry a 50-lb. toolbox up a flight of stairs.
• Climb and work from ladders or scaffolding.
• Enter and exit vehicles with high ground clearance.
• Tighten and loosen nuts and bolts using arms and back strength.
• Work safely in confined spaces while wearing required safety equipment.
