Job Description
Electrical Controls Supervisor
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Controls Supervisor to lead electrical and controls activities within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This hands-on leadership role will oversee a team of electricians and controls technicians while supporting the troubleshooting, programming, installation, and improvement of automated equipment and control systems.
The ideal candidate will have proven leadership experience and the ability to independently program PLCs from scratch—not simply troubleshoot or modify existing programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, develop, and provide daily direction to electricians, controls technicians, and other technical personnel.
- Assign work, establish priorities, monitor performance, and ensure projects and maintenance activities are completed safely and on schedule.
- Design, develop, and program PLC control systems from the ground up.
- Troubleshoot and modify PLC programs, HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, industrial networks, and automated equipment.
- Diagnose complex electrical and controls-related equipment failures to minimize downtime.
- Lead electrical installations, control-system upgrades, automation projects, and equipment commissioning.
- Read, interpret, and update electrical schematics, ladder-logic diagrams, control drawings, and technical documentation.
- Partner with Maintenance, Engineering, Production, and outside vendors to improve equipment reliability and manufacturing performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve automation, cycle time, equipment efficiency, safety, and product quality.
- Develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for electrical and controls systems.
- Maintain accurate backups of PLC, HMI, and other controls programs.
- Train and mentor team members in electrical troubleshooting, controls programming, and safe work practices.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements, NFPA 70E, electrical codes, lockout/tagout procedures, and company safety standards.
- Support production during equipment breakdowns and participate in an on-call rotation as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience within an industrial manufacturing or automation environment.
- Hands-on experience programming PLCs from scratch, including developing logic, sequences, alarms, interlocks, and safety conditions.
- Strong electrical and controls troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, motor controls, sensors, relays, and industrial communication networks.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
- Experience troubleshooting automated production equipment and control panels.
- Strong communication, organization, and team-development skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- High school diploma or GED required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical certification in Electrical Technology, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation platforms, including Studio 5000, ControlLogix, and CompactLogix.
- Experience programming or configuring FactoryTalk View or similar HMI/SCADA systems.
- Knowledge of robotics, motion control, servo systems, and industrial networking.
- Experience designing, building, modifying, or commissioning electrical control panels.
- Familiarity with Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, or similar industrial communication protocols.
- NFPA 70E or related electrical-safety training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong hands-on leadership and coaching ability.
- Advanced PLC programming and electrical diagnostic skills.
- Ability to create well-structured, documented, and maintainable PLC programs.
- Strong root-cause analysis and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to remain calm and provide direction during urgent equipment failures.
- Commitment to workplace safety, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement.
Work Environment
This position operates primarily within an industrial manufacturing environment and may require extended periods of standing, walking, climbing, bending, and working around operating machinery. Occasional overtime, weekend work, or after-hours support may be required based on production needs.
