Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg, Maryland is seeking a full-time Digital Archivist I.

 

SUMMARY OF POSITION

 

This position reports to the Digital Archivist II. Among their duties and priorities will be digitization of paper records; conversion of analog audio-visual records to digital formats; implementation, along with the Digital Archivist II, of a digital preservation plan; and providing input for planning and implementation of a system for photo management. These duties include the creation, storage, preservation, organization, and description of these materials.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  1. Digitization of paper records and analog audio-visual records, as well as providing input for appropriate and worthwhile digitization projects within the collections.
  2. Work with the Digital Archivist II for creation, ingest, processing, storage, and maintenance of incoming digital and digitized materials, ensuring that they are processed into the same record groups as the paper collections that currently populate the bulk of our repository. This will include running checksum tests to ensure that stored materials do not become corrupt and periodically working to update procedures for preservation, storage, naming, confidentiality, and security protocols.
  3. Support all born-digital and digitization activities and programs of the Provincial Archives, particularly those involving the ingest, processing and safe storage of electronic records.
  4. Assist with reference and research requests related to both digital and analog materials.
  5. Work with the Digital Archivist, Provincial Archivist, and outside partners for sharing digitized resources. This includes collaborating with archivists and librarians from outside organizations on shared resource and ownership agreements.
  6. Collaborate with other archivists of the Daughters of Charity and the Seton Shrine for exhibits and displays as needed.
  7. Process archival records according to current archival best practices
  8. Staff reading room as needed.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Office Environment, with occasional physical projects involving moving and lifting of heavy boxes, artwork, artifacts, or materials.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

This position requires a graduate degree in Library and Information Science, Archives and Records Management, Public History, or a related discipline with graduate level or professional development coursework in archives. Undergraduate degree only with accompanying certification through the Society of American Archivists or Academy of Certified Archivists along with experience will be considered. It also requires at least one year of experience (including education, volunteer, and internship work) assessing, appraising, or describing digital content. Candidate should also possess knowledge of digital preservation issues and best practices, as well as a desire and willingness to stay abreast of ever-changing archival technology and standards.

 

Preferred qualifications include certificate or certification through the Society of American Archivists or Academy of Certified Archivists.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

  1. Knowledge of digital preservation standards and systems, including ingest, arrangement, description, and naming conventions
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation issues, strategies, standards, and best practices
  3. Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies; ability to relate appropriately to a broad and diverse clientele.
  4. Ability to utilize archival databases and content management systems.
  5. Knowledge of the history of the Catholic Church in the United States, communities of women religious, or the Vincentian charism is preferred.
  6. Ability to read French is a benefit but not a requirement.

Pay range is $25.96 - $28.37 per hour.
