Medical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Lab Technician

Provide comprehensive patient care in a clinical laboratory setting, ensuring safety and minimizing medical errors. Perform diagnostic testing across all laboratory disciplines—including blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, urinalysis, and phlebotomy. Verify questionable results and repeat procedures when necessary. Support routine phlebotomy services as needed. This is a full time, 30 hr/wk position with rotating On Call on weeknights, weekends & holidays. 

Education and/or Experience

•             Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, or Chemistry.

•             Associate degree in Medical Technology, required

•             Active registration with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Laboratory Technologists (AMT)

Certificates, Licensure, Registrations

•             Board Certified in Medical Laboratory Science (ASCP, AMT) 

•             Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Significant Duties

•             Perform chemical and cellular analysis of body fluids (e.g., blood, urine, spinal fluid)

•             Conduct high-complexity testing and validate accuracy of results 

•             Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments

•             Prepare reagents and perform routine equipment maintenance

•             Collect and label specimens accurately, ensuring proper patient identification

•             Communicate critical lab values to clinical staff with proper documentation

•             Respond promptly to STAT, timed, and call-result specimens

•             Monitor quality assurance programs and document troubleshooting using SBAR or QA formats

•             Provide technical interpretation of test results to physicians, patients, and families

•             Submit abnormal findings to the Pathologist for review

•             Maintain adequate inventory of testing supplies

•             Present records and procedures to accrediting inspectors as needed

•             Collaborate with other departments to support patient care and performance improvement

•             Assist in compiling data for reports and audits

•             Review and resolve outstanding reports and specimens during each shift

•             Support and oversee managerial duties when assigned

•             Foster teamwork and offer assistance to colleagues

•             Stay current with hospital policies and regulatory standards

•             Demonstrate the ability to be flexible, organized and function in stressful situations.

•             Demonstrate the value of team concepts on a consistent basis.

•             Offer supportive assistance to co-workers.

•             Manage and operate laboratory equipment safely and correctly.

•             Consult with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.

•             Assist in compiling data for all necessary reports promptly.

•             Review pending and outstanding reports on every shift and follow up to resolve outstanding specimens.

•             Oversee and assist with manager duties when assigned.
