Commercial Driver's License Instructor (CDL Part-Time)

Tri-Rivers Career Center Adult Education is seeking an experienced Class A CDL Instructor to provide hands-on training in commercial vehicle operation, inspections, safe-driving practices, and preparation for CDL written and skills testing.

This part-time position is a great opportunity for an experienced over-the-road driver, local or regional commercial driver, or transportation professional who wants to share their expertise while continuing to work in the industry. Prior teaching experience is not required, though experience in CDL training or driver education is a plus. We are looking for someone with strong driving knowledge who can translate real-world experience into practical, engaging instruction for adult learners.

What You'll Teach

Depending on the training assignment, instruction may include:

• Pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections

• Basic vehicle control, including backing maneuvers and range skills

• Shifting techniques and behind-the-wheel road driving

• Trip planning, hours-of-service rules, and logbooks

• FMCSA and DOT regulations

• Hazard awareness, defensive driving, and road safety

• Preparation for CDL written and skills testing

• Professionalism and real-world expectations of the trucking industry

Instruction is aligned with FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) standards.

What You'll Do

As a part-time instructor, you will:

• Deliver engaging classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel training

• Demonstrate professional driving techniques and safe vehicle operation

• Help learners build practical skills and confidence through hands-on practice

• Evaluate student progress through written tests, range evaluations, and road skills assessments

• Maintain accurate attendance, training, and progress records

• Conduct inspections on training vehicles and report maintenance concerns promptly

• Maintain a professional, organized, and safety-focused training environment

• Connect instruction to current industry practices and employer needs

• Collaborate with Tri-Rivers staff to support customized employer training and Adult Education programming

The position also includes participation in applicable staff training and collaboration with program and administrative staff.

Job Requirements:

• Three or more years of verifiable, recent over-the-road or relevant commercial driving experience

• Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record

• Working knowledge of FMCSA regulations, pre-trip inspections, logbooks, trip planning, and safe-driving practices

• Ability to explain driving skills and regulations clearly to learners with varying levels of experience

• Strong communication, organization, and professionalism

• Commitment to safety and hands-on learning

• Must hold or be able to obtain an appropriate Adult Education license or credential through the Ohio Department of Education

Schedule

This is a part-time instructional position with assignments based on program and employer training needs. Training opportunities may occur during weekdays, evenings, or weekends, providing flexibility for professionals currently driving in the industry.

Compensation details: 38.42 Hourly Wage
