Position Overview

DOT Construction is seeking a hands-on Safety Coordinator to support field operations across commercial and residential construction projects. This position will help establish, monitor, and maintain safe working conditions while working directly with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, subcontractors, and field crews.

The Safety Coordinator will be responsible for daily jobsite safety observations, inspections, documentation, employee communication, training support, corrective-action tracking, and helping ensure that DOT Construction's safety expectations are consistently implemented in the field.

What You Will Do on the Jobsite

Field Safety & Compliance

·   Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections and document observed conditions, hazards, and corrective actions.

·   Monitor daily construction activities for compliance with company safety procedures, project requirements, and applicable OSHA standards.

·   Verify required PPE is being properly used and that employees and subcontractors follow established safety practices.

·   Monitor housekeeping, access/egress, ladders, scaffolds, fall protection, material storage, electrical safety, tools, equipment, and other common construction hazards.

·   Identify unsafe conditions immediately and communicate required corrective actions to the responsible Foreman, Superintendent, or Project Manager.

·   Follow up on identified deficiencies until corrective action has been completed.

Safety Planning & Jobsite Support

·   Review upcoming work activities and help identify potential hazards before work begins.

·   Assist with Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and task-specific safety planning as required.

·   Assist with pre-task planning, daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, and project-specific safety meetings.

·   Support site-specific safety procedures and emergency response plans.

·   Coordinate with field supervision to incorporate safety requirements into daily production planning.

·   Help maintain safety signage, barricades, warning systems, and required site controls.

Training & Employee Communication

·   Conduct or assist with new-hire safety orientations and project-specific safety onboarding.

·   Assist with toolbox talks and safety training for field personnel.

·   Communicate safety expectations clearly to employees, subcontractors, and visitors.

·   Help identify recurring safety issues and recommend practical methods to improve field performance.

·   Promote a safety culture based on accountability, hazard recognition, communication, and prevention.

Documentation & Reporting

·   Maintain accurate daily, weekly, and project safety documentation.

·   Document safety observations, inspections, corrective actions, training, toolbox talks, and incidents.

·   Assist with incident and near-miss reporting, investigation, documentation, and follow-up.

·   Maintain required safety records and ensure documentation is available for project management review.

·   Track open safety deficiencies and provide status updates to project leadership.

·   Prepare concise safety reports identifying trends, recurring issues, and recommended corrective actions.

Communication & Coordination

·   Work professionally with General Contractors, owners, subcontractors, inspectors, and other trade partners.

·   Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen to address safety concerns without unnecessarily disrupting production.

·   Identify conflicts between planned work and safe work practices before they become incidents or schedule impacts.

·   Escalate serious or repeated safety concerns promptly through the appropriate management chain.

·   Maintain professional, respectful communication when correcting unsafe conditions.

What We Look For in a Safety Coordinator

DOT Construction is looking for a safety professional who understands that effective construction safety is achieved in the field—not just through paperwork. The successful candidate will be comfortable walking active jobsites, communicating with craftsmen and supervisors, recognizing hazards, documenting conditions, and following issues through to resolution.

·   Construction field experience with a strong understanding of jobsite operations.

·   Strong knowledge of OSHA construction safety requirements.

·   Ability to recognize hazards and communicate corrective actions clearly.

·   Strong documentation and organizational skills.

·   Ability to read construction drawings, schedules, and work plans sufficiently to understand planned activities.

·   Professional communication skills with employees, subcontractors, and management.

·   Ability to work independently while remaining closely coordinated with project leadership.

·   Strong attention to detail and willingness to enforce established safety requirements consistently.

·   Ability to work in active construction environments and travel between project sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications

·   OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.

·   OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification.

·   Experience with commercial, industrial, or residential construction.

·   Experience conducting jobsite inspections and safety orientations.

·   Experience with incident/near-miss investigations and corrective-action tracking.

·   CPR/First Aid certification.

·   Additional construction safety certifications or formal safety training.
