The Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System (SERS) is seeking a motivated, inquisitive, and detail-oriented individual to serve as a Retirement Technician Trainee in our Benefits Determination Division. The employee in this position will be promoted to Retirement Technician upon successful completion of a one-year training program. Read on for more details! DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role you will be responsible for processing retirement and disability requests from the SERS regional counseling centers. This work involves reviewing various employment and earnings records to gather the necessary information required to compute the benefit computations for each of our members. It requires a keen eye for detail and an ability to perform basic mathematic calculations.

This is a trainee position, so we will teach you what you need to know. After successful completion of a 12-month training period, you will receive a promotion to Retirement Technician. This is rewarding work in helping employees to achieve their retirement goals, so don't delay--apply today!

Key responsibilities as a Retirement Technician Trainee include:

  • Application Review: Examine retirement and death benefit forms for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with guidelines
  • Member Research: Research member history and employment records to confirm eligibility and validate data for benefit calculations
  • Data Reconciliation: Correct and reconcile system information with verified records to ensure accurate payment results
  • Payment Processing: Enter required data, apply appropriate methods, and prepare verified transactions for audit
  • Benefit Calculation: Perform calculations and adjustments for retirement, disability, and death benefits
  • Communication Support: Provide clear updates and information to members, representatives, and authorized parties

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute meal period OR 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 1-hour meal period.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home part-time (hybrid telework schedule), up to 3 days per week, depending on operational needs and progress in learning assigned tasks. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you must work on-site at the work location specified in this job posting. Telework arrangements are subject to change.
