Role Description The Veterans Affairs Service Officer is a full-time, on-site role based in Oskaloosa, IA. This position is responsible for assisting veterans and their families in understanding and accessing federal, state, and local benefits, including compensation, pension, health care, education, and other available services. Daily tasks include conducting interviews and intake consultations, reviewing military service and medical records, preparing and submitting claims and appeals, and maintaining accurate case files and documentation. The Service Officer will coordinate with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies, represent veterans in benefit-related matters, and provide clear guidance on regulations and procedures. The role also involves community outreach, participating in veteran-focused events, delivering informational presentations, and collaborating with American Legion posts and community partners to expand access to services.

Qualifications

• Strong case management and administrative skills, including record review, documentation, and organized follow-up on claims and appeals.

• Knowledge of veterans’ benefits systems, relevant regulations, and basic familiarity with federal, state, and local veteran support programs.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interviewing, counseling, presenting information, and building trust with diverse veteran populations.

• Problem-solving, critical thinking, and attention to detail to interpret rules, address complex benefit issues, and advocate effectively on behalf of clients.
\n
• Proficiency with office software, databases, and secure information handling; ability to learn and use specialized case management or VA-related systems.

• Ability to work on-site in Oskaloosa, IA, collaborate with team members and volunteers, and engage in community outreach and occasional travel within Iowa.
\n
• Prior military service, experience in veterans’ services, social work, counseling, or public administration is highly beneficial.
\n
• High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., human services, social work, public administration, criminal justice) is preferred.
