Job Summary
The Emergency Room Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, compassionate nursing care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department. This position is responsible for assessing patients, identifying urgent and emergent conditions, administering treatments and medications, monitoring patient status, and collaborating with physicians and the healthcare team to deliver safe and effective care.
The ER RN must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple patients and competing needs, and respond quickly to changes in patient condition while maintaining accurate documentation and compliance with hospital policies and applicable healthcare standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and promptly identify changes in patient condition.
- Triage and prioritize patients based on acuity and clinical needs.
- Provide emergency nursing care to patients with a wide range of illnesses, injuries, and medical conditions.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and other treatments as ordered.
- Initiate and assist with emergency interventions, procedures, and resuscitation efforts.
- Monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygen saturation, and other clinical indicators.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
- Assist physicians and other providers with examinations, procedures, and emergency interventions.
- Provide wound care, splinting, IV placement, specimen collection, and other nursing procedures within scope of practice.
- Obtain and accurately document patient histories, assessments, interventions, medications, and outcomes in the electronic medical record.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, patients, and families.
- Provide patient and family education regarding treatment, medications, follow-up care, and discharge instructions.
- Safely transfer and coordinate care for patients being admitted, transferred, or discharged.
- Maintain patient safety, privacy, and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
- Follow infection prevention, medication safety, and emergency department protocols.
- Maintain required certifications, competencies, and clinical knowledge through continuing education.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and department activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate nursing leadership.
Required Qualifications
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
- Previous nursing experience preferred; emergency department experience preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to prioritize care in a fast-paced emergency department environment.
- Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to changing patient conditions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical documentation.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation and comply with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
Required Certifications
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification.
- Current PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification, if required by the department.
- Additional emergency nursing certifications may be required based on hospital requirements.
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — Required
- BSN preferred.
