Survey Crew Chief

Position: Survey Crew Chief
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Hourly Pay Rate: $47.50/hr.
Contract Duration: 12-Months

System One is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to support electric distribution, gas, transmission, and substation projects across multiple service territories. This field-based role is responsible for performing a variety of land surveying activities, including topographic surveys, construction staking, and other survey-related work utilizing GPS, laser scanning, and survey instruments provided by the company.
The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, traveling to project sites, and operating independently while supporting critical utility infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform land surveying activities in support of electric, gas, transmission, and substation projects.
• Conduct topographic, construction, and as-built surveys.
• Operate GPS survey equipment, laser scanners, Trimble instruments, and data collectors.
• Collect, verify, and manage survey data for engineering and construction teams.
• Travel to project sites and independently perform field survey work.
• Maintain survey equipment and ensure data accuracy and quality.
• Coordinate with survey teams, engineers, project managers, and construction personnel.
• Follow all company safety protocols and field procedures.
• Complete required documentation and reporting for assigned projects.

What You'll Be Doing

• A typical day begins with receiving assignments from the survey group before traveling to project locations. Most of the workday is spent outdoors performing field surveys and gathering data. This position requires significant travel within the service territory and limited time in an office environment.
• This is an individual contributor role with no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

• Primarily field-based with minimal office work.
• Independent work with regular collaboration across project teams.
• Frequent travel to project sites.
• Exposure to active construction sites and outdoor conditions.
• Company vehicle and survey equipment provided.
• Occasional overnight travel may be required.
• The team environment is supportive and collaborative while allowing Survey Crew Chiefs significant ownership of their assignments.

Required Qualifications

• 4+ years of land surveying experience.
• Experience performing topographic and construction surveys.
• Proficiency with GPS survey equipment.
• Experience utilizing laser scanning technology.
• Experience with Trimble survey equipment and data collectors.
• Strong computer and technology skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability and willingness to travel regularly.
• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Approximately 10 years of land surveying experience.
• Associate degree in Surveying Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
• Experience supporting utility, transmission, substation, or infrastructure projects.
• Advanced knowledge of modern survey technologies and data collection methods.

Travel Requirements
This position requires regular travel throughout:

• Minnesota
• Wisconsin
• North Dakota
• South Dakota
• Upper Michigan
• Additional project locations as needed
• Overnight travel may occur one to two nights per week depending on project assignments.
• Company vehicles and required survey equipment will be provided.

Schedule

• Monday through Friday
• Typical workload of 40 to 50 hours per week
• Overtime is common, averaging approximately 10 hours per week
• Occasional extended workdays may be required to support project schedules

Location
Candidate location is flexible within the service territory.
Preferred locations include:

• Minneapolis, MN
• Hudson, WI
• Eau Claire, WI
• Other nearby Xcel Energy service center locations
• The position is primarily field-based and requires travel throughout the assigned region.
