Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) to perform a broad range of clinical laboratory testing supporting the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients.

The Medical Technologist will perform laboratory procedures accurately and efficiently, analyze and interpret test results, maintain quality and regulatory standards, and work collaboratively with laboratory and clinical teams. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical expertise, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine and specialized clinical laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures and laboratory standards.
• Receive, identify, prepare, process, and analyze patient specimens.
• Perform testing in applicable laboratory areas, which may include:
• Hematology
• Chemistry
• Microbiology
• Blood Bank/Transfusion Services
• Coagulation
• Urinalysis
• Serology/Immunology
• Molecular diagnostics
• Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
• Review, validate, and report laboratory results accurately and within established turnaround times.
• Recognize abnormal, critical, or questionable results and follow appropriate procedures for verification and notification.
• Perform quality control testing and identify trends or problems requiring corrective action.
• Participate in proficiency testing and quality assurance activities.
• Troubleshoot testing discrepancies, instrument problems, and specimen issues.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
• Follow established infection-control, safety, chemical hygiene, and bloodborne-pathogen procedures.
• Maintain compliance with applicable laboratory policies, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.
• Participate in inventory management and ensure adequate availability of reagents, supplies, and testing materials.
• Assist with training and orientation of laboratory personnel, students, or Medical Laboratory Technicians as appropriate.
• Communicate effectively with laboratory leadership, technologists, technicians, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and patient privacy requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field meeting applicable laboratory requirements.
• Demonstrated experience working in a clinical laboratory environment.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory testing principles, specimen handling, quality control, and laboratory safety.
• Ability to perform testing accurately while managing multiple priorities and established turnaround times.
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary laboratory team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with laboratory information systems and computerized laboratory equipment.

Certification

Preferred or required certification may include:

• ASCP Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
• AMT Medical Technologist (MT)
• Other nationally recognized laboratory certification meeting applicable employer and regulatory requirements.

Certification and education requirements should be verified against the specific laboratory's CLIA and applicable state requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Technologist II.
• Experience in an acute-care hospital or high-volume clinical laboratory.
• Experience working across multiple laboratory disciplines.
• Experience with automated chemistry, hematology, microbiology, blood bank, or molecular instrumentation.
• Strong troubleshooting and instrument-maintenance experience.
• Experience with laboratory quality assurance and regulatory inspections.
• Experience training or mentoring laboratory technicians and new employees.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced MLS/MT who can independently perform complex laboratory testing while maintaining a high level of accuracy, quality, and patient safety.

Candidates with strong experience in acute-care hospital laboratories, blood bank, microbiology, chemistry, hematology, or other high-volume laboratory environments are encouraged to apply.

Compensation

$36.00–$42.00 per hour based on experience and qualifications.

This represents approximately $74,880–$87,360 annually based on a 40-hour workweek, before overtime or additional compensation.

The compensation range is intended to attract experienced Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists with strong technical skills, relevant certification, and clinical laboratory experience.

Work Environment

This is a clinical laboratory position requiring the ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Depending on department and operational requirements, the position may include weekend, evening, night, holiday, or on-call responsibilities.

Candidates must be comfortable handling biological specimens, working with laboratory chemicals and equipment, and following strict safety, quality, and infection-control procedures.
