Job Description

Job Description

Established in 1892, Royston Rayzor maintains an internationally recognized maritime, commercial litigation, and insurance defense practice, with offices in Houston, Galveston, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and the Rio Grande Valley. The Firm currently seeks a Texas-licensed associate attorney with 2+ years of civil litigation experience for its Houston office. The position will focus on the Firm’s maritime practice.

Our Houston maritime practice represents vessel owners and operators, charterers, Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Clubs, and London market underwriters, many of them based overseas. The work includes personal injury and wrongful death claims by seamen and longshore workers, collisions, allisions, surge and wake damage, limitation of liability proceedings, vessel arrests and Rule B attachments, cargo and charter party disputes, and related commercial matters.

In addition to active involvement in standard litigation activities (e.g., depositions/discovery, hearings, and motion practice), the position will also involve emergency response to casualty incidents, allowing the associate attorney to gain firsthand experience handling a case from inception to conclusion, including substantial investigation activities and administrative proceedings conducted by governmental authorities. This is an action-packed position that offers valuable early case-handling and client interaction experience that is rarely available at other civil litigation firms.

We are looking for someone who is smart, driven, and exercises good judgment. In practice, that means an associate who:

•       Writes clearly and precisely and provides sound analysis

•       Takes ownership of files and moves them forward without needing to be chased

•       Exercises practical, business-minded judgment about how to resolve a matter, not just how to litigate it

•       Stays composed and decisive under time pressure, including casualty response

Prior maritime law experience is not required, but the candidate must have previous civil litigation experience, including personal injury matters. The candidate should also possess strong academic credentials, as well as excellent writing skills.

Given the benefits of these collaborative efforts, this is an in-person position.

The position pays $150,000+ per year, depending on experience, plus bonuses tied to transparent and objective metrics. The Firm also offers great benefits, including health, dental, disability, and life insurance, a 401(k) plan, and sensible personal time off (PTO) allowances.

Please submit a resume, a short cover letter, and a writing sample that you wrote yourself to Eugene Barr or Thomas Winkler
