Telecommunications Operator

The Centrex Operator is responsible for the operation of the switchboard console unit to relay incoming and outgoing calls and interoffice calls.  S/he performs related miscellaneous Hospital communication and clerical duties.  The Centrex Operator records and relays messages to the appropriate people.  S/he also pages authorized personnel over the public address and paging systems.

II.                 Qualifications:

Required Education:

• High school diploma or GED or the combination of education, knowledge, skills, mental development, and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.

Desirable Education:

• High school diploma or GED

Required Experience:

• Minimum of one (1) year of multi-line switchboard experience. 
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

Desirable Experience:

• Minimum of two (2) years of multi-line switchboard experience with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Meditech programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

General:

• Professionally administer all in-coming and out-going calls.
• Ensure phone calls are redirected correctly.
• Provide callers with information such as address, fax number, website address, directions to the Hospital, and other related information.
• Announce emergencies such as fire, disaster codes, and the close of visiting hours according to Hospital policy.
• Activate emergency alarms located in the Centrex room.
• Announce meetings and in-service classes prior to start time.
• Place long distance calls for authorized staff and patients.
• Maintain the long distance log book.
• Make overhead announcements as needed.
• Answer caller’s questions according to Hospital policies and procedures.
• Call in emergency surgery staff as requested.
• Page staff on in-house and long rage paging system.
