About the Role:
A trailer mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of trailer to ensure they are roadworthy and function properly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspecting and troubleshooting: Diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on trailers, including brakes, axles, suspension systems, and electrical components.
- Repairing and replacing parts: Performing necessary repairs and replacing damaged or worn parts, including panels, lights, brakes, air lines, tires, and suspension components.
- Preventative maintenance: Change and patch tires
- Welding and fabrication (optional but a plus): Having the ability to perform welding and fabrication work when needed for repairs on trailer components.
- Safety and compliance: Ensuring all work adheres to safety protocols, industry standards, and relevant regulations like those from the Department of Transportation (DOT).
- Documentation: Maintaining accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities performed on each trailer.
- Communication: Interacting with drivers and other staff to diagnose and solve mechanical issues and communicating with customers about repairs and maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED certificate, and completion of a certificate program or technical training in mechanics and truck repair are often preferred.
- Some positions may require a minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a trailer mechanic or in a related field.
Technical Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of trailer systems, including brakes, suspension, electrical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatic systems.
- Familiarity with various hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment used in trailer maintenance and repair.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and diagrams.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy equipment and perform tasks requiring bending, lifting, and kneeling for extended periods.
