School Nurse — Registered Nurse (RN) / Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)


Available Schedules:

  • RN and LPN: Monday–Friday, 6:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
  • LPN: Sunday–Thursday, 3:30 p.m.–11:00 p.m.


Position Summary

Provide in-school nursing services to students ages 5–21 who are blind, deaf-blind, or have multiple disabilities. The nurse supports student health and safety, administers prescribed medications and treatments, maintains accurate health records, and collaborates with school staff and families.

The nurse works directly with the Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent and completes orientation before beginning services.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Document pertinent health information in student charts and other designated records.
  • Follow the Health Center Protocol Manual and Missouri School for the Blind guidelines.
  • Provide first aid and emergency first aid to students and, when appropriate under school guidelines, staff.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician.
  • Apply knowledge of medication dosages, side effects, and related considerations.
  • Record medications and treatments according to established procedures.
  • Schedule student appointments, obtain relevant records, and escort students to appointments.
  • Attend student functions and job-related educational programs as required.
  • Report findings requiring further attention to the supervisor.
  • For RN positions: Supervise the school’s Licensed Practical Nurses.


Qualifications

  • Hold a current Missouri Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse license, as appropriate for the position, in compliance with Chapter 335 of the Revised Missouri Statutes.
  • Maintain licensure in good standing throughout the assignment.
  • Have experience providing therapy services to school-age children ages 5–21 who are blind, deaf-blind, or have multiple disabilities.
  • Understand the organization and administration of health center services for school-age children.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of child growth and development, particularly for students who are blind, deaf-blind, or have multiple disabilities.
  • Possess knowledge of medication dosages and side effects.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and parents.


Pre-Service Requirements

  • Register with the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry and complete required background screening.
  • Pass a nationwide fingerprint-based background check through the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
