Job Title: Sample Control Technician 3 / Lab Technician 2Job Description

This role focuses on logging, tracking, and coordinating the receipt and shipment of samples into and out of the laboratory while ensuring accurate documentation and regulatory compliance. The Sample Control Technician prepares bottle kits for clients, maintains precise sample identification and routing, and supports smooth daily laboratory operations through careful handling, organization, and safety-conscious practices.

Responsibilities
  • Log and track the receipt and shipment of all samples into and out of the laboratory while verifying receipt of samples.
  • Receive and unload incoming samples or consignments in accordance with DOT regulations and verify each receipt against the Chain of Custody (COC), matching it to the corresponding quote and documenting discrepancies on a daily basis.
  • Review COCs to ensure they are accurate, complete, and correct, and actively seek resolution for any discrepancies or incomplete information.
  • Log samples into the Laboratory Management System daily, assign lot numbers for tracking purposes, and distribute associated paperwork to Project Managers.
  • Label and organize samples so they can be clearly identified by their assigned lot numbers and deliver them to the appropriate laboratories for analysis on a daily basis.
  • Prepare bottle kits daily to be shipped to clients for sample collection and return, following established procedures and complying with EPA and DOT requirements.
  • Forward samples to other laboratories as needed in accordance with DOT regulations when tests cannot be performed at the current location.
  • Dispose of spent samples, waste, and other potentially hazardous materials in accordance with established procedures and environmental guidelines.
  • Monitor freezer and cooler temperatures daily to confirm that readings remain within standard operating procedure (SOP) guidelines and document any deviations as required.
  • Clean and organize the department daily to promote a clean, safe work environment and ensure a smooth flow of daily operations.
  • Maintain and promote safety at all times by conducting all operations in a safe and environmentally compliant manner.
  • Stock supplies and maintain inventory on a daily basis to ensure adequate materials are available to perform tasks efficiently and appropriately.
Essential Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact clearly with internal teams and accurately document sample information.
  • High level of attention to detail to ensure precise logging, labeling, and tracking of samples and Chain of Custody documentation.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to identify and resolve discrepancies in documentation and sample handling.
  • Advanced ability to work independently and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory and testing procedures relevant to sample control and handling.
  • Advanced ability to analyze data and accurately document and record results in laboratory systems.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 57 years of experience in a laboratory, sample control, or closely related environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associates degree in laboratory science or a related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Chain of Custody (COC) processes and documentation.
  • Experience working with Laboratory Management Systems for logging and tracking samples.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations related to the shipment and handling of laboratory samples.
  • Understanding of EPA requirements related to sample collection, packaging, and transport.
  • Comfort working with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhering to strict regulatory and quality standards.
Work Environment

The role is based in a laboratory setting that handles a high volume of incoming and outgoing samples, requiring frequent interaction with freezers, coolers, and other temperature-controlled storage. The position involves daily monitoring of equipment, handling of potentially hazardous materials, and adherence to DOT, EPA, and internal SOP requirements. Work is structured around regular business operations with a strong emphasis on safety, environmental compliance, cleanliness, and organization. The environment is process-driven and detail-oriented, supporting collaboration with Project Managers and other laboratory staff while also requiring the ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
