Job Title: Medical Assistant Dermatology / Mohs Surgery

Job Description

This Medical Assistant role supports a busy dermatology practice with a strong focus on Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical dermatology visits. You will prepare procedure rooms, assist the Mohs surgeon throughout all stages of surgery, provide direct patient care and education, and manage detailed clinical and administrative documentation in multiple electronic medical record (EMR) systems. This position offers the opportunity to develop specialized skills in dermatology and histotechnology while working closely with providers in a collaborative clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare exam and procedure rooms for Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical dermatology visits, ensuring proper setup of procedural instruments and efficient clinic flow.
  • Assist the Mohs surgeon during all stages of the procedure, including preoperative care, tissue preparation, hemostasis, wound closure, and postoperative care.
  • Perform patient intake by obtaining medical history, reviewing consent forms, obtaining surgical photographs, and addressing pre-procedure concerns.
  • Provide clear wound care instructions and educate patients on post-procedure expectations to support safe recovery and optimal outcomes.
  • Process and handle tissue specimens for pathology evaluation according to established protocols.
  • Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of procedures, medications, MIPS-related information, and follow-up instructions in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Schedule pre- and post-operative appointments and assist with patient inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Confirm patient insurance coverage and obtain prior authorizations when required.
  • Accurately complete patient charting and documentation to maintain comprehensive and compliant medical records.
  • Manage pathology logs and act as liaison between physician and patient to deliver pathology results and complete communication documentation according to protocol.
  • Record required information in compliance logs, including pathology, biopsy, laboratory, and temperature logs.
  • Adhere to and maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards, and complete mandatory compliance training.
  • Cross-train in the Mohs laboratory to perform histotechnology-related components to the extent allowed by state-specific CLIA requirements.
  • Cross-train in general and cosmetic dermatology to support broader clinical operations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall efficiency and quality of patient care in the practice.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated medical assisting skills in a clinical setting, with direct patient care experience.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, particularly related to dermatology and surgical procedures.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain exam and procedure rooms for surgical and medical visits.
  • Skill in assisting with surgical procedures, including tissue handling, hemostasis support, and wound care.
  • Proficiency in patient intake processes, including obtaining medical histories, reviewing consent forms, and documenting clinical information.
  • Experience using electronic medical record (EMR) systems, including NextGen and EMA, or similar platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail in charting, documentation, and compliance log management.
  • Ability to follow established protocols for pathology specimen processing and communication of results.
  • Understanding of and adherence to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control requirements.
  • Effective communication skills for educating patients on wound care and post-procedure expectations.
  • Organizational skills to manage scheduling, prior authorizations, and multiple clinical tasks efficiently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 12 years of recent experience in a dermatology or surgical setting preferred.
  • Medical Assistant (MA) certification preferred.
  • Experience in a specialty practice, particularly dermatology or Mohs surgery, is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with quality programs such as MIPS and related documentation.
  • Willingness to cross-train in Mohs laboratory histotechnology tasks within state-specific CLIA guidelines.
  • Willingness to cross-train in general and cosmetic dermatology to support a wide range of patient services.
  • Experience in healthcare environments that utilize multiple EMR systems is beneficial.

Work Environment

This position is based in a specialty dermatology practice where you will work closely with providers in both surgical and general dermatology settings. The clinic utilizes multiple EMR systems, including NextGen and EMA, offering exposure to diverse healthcare technologies. The environment emphasizes compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards, with structured protocols for pathology, biopsy, laboratory, and temperature logs. Staff typically wear solid-color scrubs, with flexibility in color choice subject to clinic guidelines. The schedule generally includes a one-hour break around normal lunchtime, adjusted based on clinic flow and patient volume. You will work in well-equipped exam and procedure rooms, a Mohs laboratory setting for cross-training, and a collaborative team environment focused on high-quality patient care and clear communication.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portsmouth, NH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
