Construction Project Manager

Job Description

The Construction Project Manager oversees multiple retail and grocery commercial construction projects simultaneously, ensuring they are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to established quality standards. This role manages projects ranging from approximately $100,000 to $8 million and serves as the primary point of coordination among clients, subcontractors, vendors, consultants, and internal project teams from preconstruction through final closeout.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple commercial construction projects concurrently from preconstruction through final completion and closeout.
  • Oversee projects ranging from approximately $100,000 to $8 million, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, safety, and quality standards.
  • Review construction contracts, plans, specifications, and related project documents to identify execution requirements and potential risks.
  • Develop, maintain, and update detailed project schedules using Microsoft Project.
  • Prepare, negotiate, and award subcontract agreements in alignment with project scope and budget.
  • Develop and review subcontractor scopes of work to ensure complete project coverage and clarity of responsibilities.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, consultants, owners, developers, tenants, and other project stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead project meetings and prepare agendas, meeting minutes, action items, and project status updates.
  • Prepare, review, negotiate, and manage change orders to maintain control over cost and schedule impacts.
  • Track and manage RFIs, submittals, cost reports, budgets, forecasts, schedules, and overall project financial performance.
  • Support preconstruction and estimating activities, including material take-offs and constructability reviews.
  • Maintain productive, professional relationships with clients and stakeholders to support repeat business and long-term partnerships.
  • Identify project risks early and proactively resolve issues to protect the budget, schedule, quality, and project momentum.
  • Ensure project documentation remains accurate, complete, and current across multiple active projects.
  • Balance competing project priorities while maintaining organized records and clear communication with field and office teams.
  • Coordinate closely with field personnel to ensure alignment between project plans, site conditions, and construction activities.
  • Provide regular updates to internal leadership and external stakeholders on project progress, risks, and financial performance.
  • Support cost forecasting, subcontractor buyout, change management, and project financial reporting to maintain project profitability.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of commercial construction project management experience.
  • Experience overseeing commercial construction projects valued from approximately $100,000 to $8 million.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent construction projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts, budgeting, project controls, scheduling, and subcontractor management.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, estimates, and contract documents.
  • Ability to perform material take-offs and review construction estimates.
  • Experience with RFIs, submittals, change orders, cost reports, and project financial tracking.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project for developing and maintaining detailed construction schedules.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong client-facing communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills for subcontract agreements and change orders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage documentation across multiple active projects.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and demonstrated problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with owners, developers, tenants, field teams, and executive stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Retail or grocery construction experience, including projects in operational facilities, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with ground-up construction, expansions, renovations, adaptive reuse, and occupied-space projects.
  • Direct experience managing retail or grocery projects while facilities remain operational.
  • Familiarity with the South Florida construction market and local jurisdictional requirements.
  • Local market relationships with South Florida subcontractors and vendors are beneficial.
  • Demonstrated experience with cost forecasting, subcontractor buyout, change management, and project financial reporting.
  • Experience supporting preconstruction and estimating efforts, including constructability reviews.
  • Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred but not required when supported by relevant construction management experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish abilities are a plus.
  • Ability to balance competing project priorities while maintaining accurate and timely documentation.
  • Ability to build and maintain long-term client relationships and contribute directly to business growth.
  • Interest in working for an established, employee-owned general contractor with a nationwide project portfolio.
  • Motivation to take ownership of projects from conception through closeout and contribute to continuous improvement.

Work Environment

The role is primarily onsite and office-based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with regular travel to active construction sites throughout South Florida. Work takes place in a professional office setting as well as at active commercial construction sites. Site conditions may include noise, dust, changing temperatures, active equipment, and the use of required personal protective equipment. The position requires frequent coordination with clients, subcontractors, vendors, consultants, and field personnel, and involves managing multiple concurrent projects in a deadline-driven environment. Construction activities may occasionally require early morning, evening, or off-hours coordination based on project needs. The organization offers exposure to ground-up construction, renovations, expansions, adaptive reuse, and fast-track interior projects, along with opportunities for internal advancement and participation in an employee ownership program, subject to employment classification and eligibility.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $57.69/hr.
