Job Description
Steel Buyer
We are seeking an experienced Steel Buyer with a strong background in direct steel procurement within the automotive industry. The ideal candidate will have experience with steel coil, blanks, and scrap, along with strong supplier management, price negotiation, and market analysis skills.c
Key Responsibilities
- Manage direct procurement of steel coils, blanks, and scrap for automotive manufacturing.
- Negotiate steel and scrap pricing with suppliers, mills, service centers, and processors.
- Monitor steel and scrap market trends and develop cost-reduction strategies.
- Manage market index-based pricing and adjustment mechanisms, including CRU, Platts, and AMM Scrap.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with steel mills, service centers, processors, and other suppliers.
- Analyze supplier pricing, market conditions, and cost drivers to support sourcing decisions.
- Support procurement strategies and identify opportunities for cost savings and risk reduction.
- Apply knowledge of steel manufacturing processes and the automotive supply chain to support purchasing decisions.
- Prepare and analyze procurement data using Excel and PowerPoint.
Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of direct steel procurement/purchasing experience.
- Experience in an automotive Tier 1 or Tier 2 environment, preferably BIW, stamping, or metal forming.
- Proven experience negotiating steel and scrap prices.
- Strong understanding of steel market indexes and price adjustment mechanisms such as CRU, Platts, and AMM.
- Knowledge of steel-making processes, steel commodities, and automotive manufacturing.
- Strong supplier negotiation and relationship-management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
