Job Description

We are looking for a reliable and proactive Class A CDL driver to join our team as a Night Shift Lead / Relief Driver.

This is a unique opportunity for a driver who wants more responsibility and is comfortable taking ownership of nighttime operations.

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure that our nighttime operations continue without interruption. You will serve as our primary relief driver, stepping in when drivers are unavailable due to call-outs, vacations, sick days, emergencies, or other unexpected situations.

However, this position is about more than simply being a backup driver.

When route coverage is not needed, we expect the Night Shift Lead to be proactive in helping the company generate additional revenue. You will work with dispatch to identify additional routes, spot work, overflow opportunities, extra runs, and other productive work that can be completed using available drivers, equipment, and capacity.

Ideal candidate has the ability to lead, organize, multi-task, and be proactive in all duties related to this position.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary nighttime relief driver.
  • Cover routes for driver call-outs, vacations, sick days, emergencies, and unexpected absences.
  • Drive company routes whenever coverage is needed.
  • Maintain availability for up to six (6) nights per week, including weekends when required.
  • Respond to urgent nighttime operational issues.
  • Assist drivers who experience delays, breakdowns, or other problems.
  • Respond to tractor, trailer, and equipment breakdowns and help coordinate solutions.
  • Work with dispatch to reorganize routes and driver coverage when necessary.
  • Help ensure all scheduled nighttime runs are completed.
  • Proactively identify additional revenue opportunities when regular route coverage is not needed.
  • Work with dispatch to find additional routes, spot work, overflow work, extra runs, and other available opportunities.
  • Provide additional assistance to dispatch when driving coverage is not required.
  • Look for ways to make productive use of available equipment, drivers, and capacity.
  • Communicate operational issues and revenue opportunities to management.
  • Follow all company safety policies, DOT requirements, and operating procedures.
  • Perform other driving and operational duties necessary to keep nighttime operations running successfully.

What We're Looking For

  • Valid Class A CDL
  • Doubles/Triples endorsement
  • Safe driving record
  • Transportation or linehaul experience
  • Strong understanding of trucking operations
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure
  • Comfortable working independently
  • Flexible and willing to respond to changing operational needs
  • Comfortable working up to 6 nights per week
  • Willing to drive whenever operational needs require it
  • Proactive and self-motivated
  • Ability to lead, organize, and multitask
  • Strong ability to work with dispatch and coordinate operational needs
  • Willingness to identify and pursue additional work and revenue opportunities

This Position Is a Great Fit If You...

  • Enjoy being the person management can count on when something goes wrong.
  • Are comfortable jumping in and driving when needed.
  • Can work independently without constant supervision.
  • Have strong knowledge of trucking and dispatch operations.
  • Like solving problems and finding solutions.
  • Are comfortable working with dispatch and helping coordinate drivers.
  • Are proactive and able to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Want a position where your leadership, organization, and initiative are valued.

Important Availability Requirement

This position requires flexibility and availability for up to six (6) nights per week based on operational needs, including weekends.

Nightly responsibilities may vary. Some nights may involve significant driving, while other nights may involve relief coverage, dispatch support, operational problem-solving, or pursuing additional revenue opportunities.

This is a hands-on operational role — not a traditional desk-based supervisor position.
